The greens are slowly giving way to gold, orange, and red, and the mountains are getting ready for their annual wardrobe change. 🍁🏔️

It's one of our favorite things about fall in Western North Carolina. The transformation doesn't happen all at once. It starts quietly, with a few changing leaves here and there, and then suddenly... the whole mountain looks different.

So take the scenic drive. Stop at the overlook. Drink your coffee on the porch a little longer. And watch Mother Nature put on her favorite outfit. 🍂✨

That high-pitched, almost eerie sound echoing through the mountains? 😳🦌

It might be a bull elk bugling.

Fall overlaps with elk rut season, when bull elk use their distinctive bugle to communicate and compete for females. If you've never heard it before, the sound can definitely catch you off guard.

But hearing an elk bugle across the mountains is one of those “you have to experience it” WNC moments. 🏔️

If you're hoping to see elk during your stay, Cataloochee Valley is one of our favorite places to look. Early mornings and late afternoons can be especially rewarding.

Just remember, these are wild animals. Bring your binoculars, use your camera zoom, and give them plenty of space.
