Wishing all safety during hurricane season. Some key tips:
1) Know the available evacuation routes ahead of time and stay alert to all state and federal warnings. Where are your people, what are your procedures to ensure safety?
2) Have non perishable food and backup communication supplies in the event of loss or damage. What protocols are in place if it becomes difficult to communicate or contact necessary parties?
3) Understand your different coverages, especially between homeowners and property/casualty coverage. Does your home or organization require NFIP coverage for flood? Know your zone(s).
4) Are you covered for service interruption in the event that power is lost? For organizations, does business interruption coverage adequately respond to indirect losses that follow a power interruption?
5) Understand the differences between wind, named storm, and hurricane coverages. Is storm surge coverage required for coastal properties?
6) What are your deductibles and/or coinsurance requirements? Know your limits of coverage.
7) Take inventory and document values in advance of any potential losses. Keep a running record.
