A question I often get asked is “What is the difference between a product and a project manager? “

The diagram does a good job at describing the two roles. While they serve distinct purposes, the two are closely related, and depending on the the size and visibility of the project, sometimes the project manager may also serve as the product manager.

I have always appreciated having a product manager (aka owner) on my teams because they really add value in ensuring the product is defined and designed from the customers perspective, which can get lost to the project manager who is more focused on the project teams performance and delivery within the project parameters of scope, timeline and costs!

What has been your experience with these two roles? Have you worked with a product manager ( aka product owner) before and how did they add value to your project team?
