Good Afternoon, this is Daryl D. Jaschen, Director of the Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency, with an update on Tropical Storm Laura which effective 11 am today, changed direction on its path to pass between St. Thomas and St. Croix districts later this evening.
The US Virgin Islands went under a Tropical Storm Warning at 11 am today.
As of the 2 pm update by the National Hurricane Center, the storm is located
17.0 N
60.8 W
And moving 18 mph West.
Maximum Sustained Winds:45 mph.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 150 miles from the center
The concerns to the Territory from TS Laura are both rain and winds, with the St. Thomas district anticipated to receive 3-6 inches of rain and a 61 percent chance of having sustained tropical storm force winds of between 39 mph to 57 mph. For the St. Croix district, projections are 3-6 inches of rain and a 38 percent chance of tropical storm force winds.
The outer bands of the storm are project to begin impacting the Territory this evening by 8 pm and lasting throughout the night and into early morning.
If you live in flood prone areas, plan now to evacuate to a safe area with friends, and be sure to practice social distancing and wear masks. There will be no shelters open for the passing of Tropical Storm Laura.
