North Dakota Wheat Commission

North Dakota Wheat Commission Promoting North Dakota wheat domestically and to customers around the world. The North Dakota Wheat Commission is directed through a grassroots approach.

The North Dakota Wheat Commission works to sustain and expand use of wheat grown by North Dakota farmers by creating worldwide market opportunities through efforts including opening overseas markets, reinforcing consumption of grain foods, developing new wheat varieties and influencing international import and export policies. Wheat producers fund these programs with a checkoff of a penny and a ha

lf on each bushel sold. Producers meet at the county level to elect representatives, who in turn elect six district commissioners. The governor appoints a seventh commissioner from a list of nominees submitted by major farm and grower organizations. These seven producers make up the board of commissioners. They develop policy and programs, oversee their implementation and approve budget expenditures. Commissioners can serve no more than three four-year terms. Five employees administer programs and activities.

Planting wraps up, while emergence is ahead of pace, and uneven conditions keep producers cautiously optimistic.

Spring wheat planting is nearly done in North Dakota, with about 65% of the crop emerged β€” slightly ahead of the average pace. After weeks of heat and high winds, temperatures are expected to moderate this week, and most areas picked up some precipitation over the last week.

The first USDA/NASS crop condition ratings of the season are in with 47% of the U.S. crop rated in good to excellent condition with conditions quite variable across the region.

On the durum side, seeding is nearly complete in both North Dakota (90%) and Montana (88%), with emergence around 60% in both states. Some welcome rain fell last week, but consistent moisture is still needed across the production area.

🌾 Spring wheat planting is wrapping up across the Northern Plains! And we're actually ahead of the average pace this year! That's a great start.

But the young crop is now navigating its first real challenge. Uneven emergence, heat, wind, and dry conditions have producers keeping a close eye on things. This week brings record-setting temperatures to parts of the region, and rain chances are limited, especially in central and far western North Dakota, where it's been drier than normal.

The durum crop is in a similar boat; planting is ahead of schedule, but moisture will be key in the days ahead.

The silver lining? It's still early, and the crop has time to bounce back if the weather cooperates.

It’s been a long season already, and while the work is just getting started, we wanted to take a second to pause this weekend to remember and respect the brave men and women who gave their lives serving our country.

We are deeply grateful for those who protect our freedom.

Fresh off the 70th-anniversary celebration of U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) in Tokyo, we were honored to welcome a Japanese trade delegation to the farm of USW Chairman and North Dakota grower, Jim Pellman. This visit was more than just a tour; it was a vital chapter in a relationship that has become the "gold standard" for international agricultural trade.

North Dakota's spring wheat planting crossed the two-thirds mark this week, which is slightly ahead of the average pace, despite some of the most extreme wind conditions of the season. Topsoil dried out, visibility dropped, and fieldwork came to a halt in many areas. But the weekend brought relief, with most producers picking up 0.25–1" of much-needed precipitation.

Here's where things stand heading into this week:
βœ… Spring Wheat: ~67% planted, 25% emerged in ND
βœ… Durum: 58% planted, 23% emerged in ND
βœ… SD essentially done planting | MN at 80% | MT at 70%

The recent rains should help push emergence along as temps warm toward the end of the week.
