NDAREC welcomed new employees and directors from across the state at the Cooperative Connection, a two-day course aimed at providing a solid orientation for those joining the electric cooperative family.

Participants explored the cooperative business model and principles, learned how electricity is generated, transmitted and distributed, and discussed the trends and challenges shaping the industry. A behind-the-scenes tour of BNI Coalโ€™s Center Mine and Minnkota Power Cooperativeโ€™s Milton R. Young Station provided a firsthand look at how North Dakota lignite helps power our communities.

Thank you to the speakers and cooperative leaders who shared their knowledge and experience throughout the event:Bryan Singletary, Practical Energies; Josh Kramer, executive vice president and general manager, NDAREC; Jean Brandt, director, Central Power and North Central Electric Co-Op, and NDAREC board member; Paul Fitterer, general manager, Capital Electric Cooperative ; Christel Laskowski, business manager, Verendrye Electric Cooperative; Chris Baumgartner, senior vice president of member and external relations, Basin Electric Power Cooperative; and Doug Remboldt, president and CEO, National Information Solutions Cooperative(NISC).

The Cooperative Connection helped participants better understand what it means to be part of the electric cooperative network and the important role each employee and director plays in serving members and communities.

The session was led by ๐—•๐—ฟ๐˜†๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ฆ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜†, a nationally recognized utility executive and consultant with decades of experience in operations, governance and strategic leadership. Josh Kramer, NDAREC general manager and Zac Smith, government relations director also previewed issues North Dakota's electric cooperatives will likely address at the upcoming 2027 Legislative Session.

Electricity is essential to nearly every part of our lives and our economy. Sessions like Electricity Matters help provide policymakers with a better understanding of our industry, the challenges and opportunities ahead, and the important role electric cooperatives play in powering North Dakota.

Thank you to the candidates who took the time to join us, ask questions and learn more about the industry that keeps North Dakota powered.

Storms can happen any time of year, and the best time to prepare is before severe weather is in the forecast. As we recognize National Preparedness Month, take a few minutes this week to build or refresh your emergency kit. Include essentials like bottled water, nonperishable food, flashlights, extra batteries, a first-aid kit, medications, phone chargers and important documents.

On Aug. 27, RDFC board members and staff, along with members of the NDAREC Rural Development Services Advisory Committee, visited Carrington and Devils Lake to see loan and grant dollars at work.

Participants learned more about the RDFC program's impact from the new owners of the recently expanded R3 Meats in Carrington โ€“ a recipient of a N.D. Food Impact Fund loan. They also met with park district board members and staff at Dockside Entertainment, as well as the third-generation owner of Woodland Resort in Devils Lake, which added an event venue in 2025. The latter two projects received USDA Rural Economic Development Loans, with applications prepared by NDAREC rural development staff.

The group also toured the new Ramsey County Event Center, which benefited from grant-writing services and a connection to a donor organization that prefers to remain anonymous.

The RDFC and NDAREC Rural Development Services Advisory Committee are supported by and comprised of rural electric and broadband cooperative leaders as part of their commitment to concern for community.
