NDAREC An indispensable network of electric utility cooperatives

The North Dakota Association of Rural Elec Membership in the association is voluntary.

The North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives (NDAREC) is the trade association for the states 17 distribution co-ops and five Generation and Transmission co-ops in North Dakota. It was incorporated in 1958 and is located in Mandan, North Dakota. Today, NDAREC (also commonly referred to as Statewide) works with the state's network of electric cooperatives to provide a complete package of quality services in communications, government relations, safety training, professional development and economic development. It is offered to any electric cooperative organized for the purpose of operating electrical generating plants or transmission and distribution systems in the state of North Dakota. Happy work anniversary to Zach!

As general counsel and government relations director, Zach combines legal work, relationship building and advocacy to help ensure the voices of North Dakota’s electric cooperatives and the rural communities they serve are heard.

His favorite part of the job is working with people, building relationships and tackling tough issues together. He finds it especially rewarding to bring different perspectives to the table and work toward solutions everyone can get behind.

Practical, collaborative and dependable, Zach believes in doing his homework, following through and putting in the work to get things done, because the work he does affects real people.

Learning from others is an important step in building a stronger regional food system.

NDAREC rural development staff recently led a group of North Dakota produce growers, meat producers and partner organizations on a learning visit to western Montana. During the Oct. 13-15 trip, the group visited the Western Montana Growers Cooperative in Missoula and Mission Mountain Food Enterprise Center in Ronan, connecting with producers, processors and other food system leaders.

Through tours and candid conversations, participants explored how others are approaching local food aggregation, distribution, processing and producer collaboration, including lessons learned along the way.

We’re grateful to the many people and organizations who generously shared their time, experiences and insights with our group. Their willingness to talk openly about what has worked, what has been challenging and what they’ve learned gave us plenty to think about as we consider opportunities here in North Dakota.

Those insights will help North Dakota stakeholders consider what could work here as they continue shaping the North Central Regional Grocery and Local Food Hub Initiative, supported by a Bush Foundation grant.

𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼-𝗼𝗽 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵!

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing a few facts about cooperatives and the factors that make them a bit unique compared to traditional business models.

To kick things off, take a look at the different kinds of co-ops:
- Utility Co-ops: Provide essential services like electricity, water or broadband and are led by the members they serve.
- Consumer Co-ops: Owned by the people who shop there or use its products and services.
- Producer Co-ops: Help farmers, ranchers or other producers work together to market and sell their products.
- Worker Co-ops: Owned and operated by the employees who work there.
- Housing Co-ops: Give residents the opportunity to own and manage their housing together.
- Retail Co-ops: Allow members to shop at and help support a member-owned
- retail business.
- Financial Co-ops: Member-owned financial institutions, such as credit unions, that provide banking services.

Co-op may look a little different depending on the services they offer, but one characteristic is true for all: co-ops exist to serve their members.

Several of North Dakota’s electric cooperatives are helping bring electricity to a remote village in rural Guatemala, and you can be part of the effort.

After volunteer North Dakota lineworkers build power lines in the village, donations will help provide electric stove tops for local families. These stove tops offer a cleaner cooking option and can reduce the risks associated with cooking over an open flame.

Just a $40 donation provides one stove top for a kitchen.
