🎲🍿 “When did screens become our kids' best friends... and parents become the background noise?”😔
Today my teenager and I sat on the floor with a bowl of popcorn and played Jenga.
It may not sound like much, but as an immigrant mom, it made me think.
Back home, kids were outside. There were goats, sheep, cows to tend to, friends to play with, and endless reasons to stay active.
Here, it's different.
Many of our kids move from a phone, to an iPad, to a laptop, to a TV screen. 📱💻📺
And if you have a teenager, you know the struggle. They start wanting their own space and sometimes it feels like they're pulling away from us. 😢
What surprised me tonight was how a simple game of Jenga brought us together, even if only for a little while.
Jenga isn't just a game. It helps kids develop:
🧠 Focus and concentration.
🎯 Problem-solving skills.
🤲 Hand-eye coordination.
💡 Strategic thinking.
❤️ Patience and communication.
Most importantly, it creates moments of connection in a world full of distractions.
No, my teenager didn't suddenly want to spend the whole evening talking to me. 😂 But for those few minutes, we laughed, focused, and shared a moment together.
And sometimes that's enough.
As parents, especially immigrant parents, we're competing with a world of technology. But we don't need hours of perfect bonding. Sometimes all it takes is one game, one walk, one conversation, one bowl of popcorn.
Parents of teens, what activities have helped you connect with your kids away from screens?
Let's share ideas and encourage each other—because raising children in today's world wasn't meant to be done alone.
