I realized I had spent my entire career learning how to build.

How to turn ideas into reality.
How to figure it out.
How to make things happen.

I just never considered what would happen if I did it for myself.

And maybe that’s the question more of us need to ask.

“What could I build with everything I already know?”

You don’t have to quit your job.

You don’t have to risk everything.

You don’t even have to know exactly what “it” is yet.

But your career doesn’t have to be the biggest thing you ever build.

Project managers, I think our training can actually work against us when it comes to our own growth.

We’re trained to plan: define the outcome, build the roadmap, identify risks, think through dependencies, THEN execute.

Professionally? That makes sense.

But we bring that same mindset into our lives and think we need the full plan before we start.

The niche. The business model. The 5-year plan. The perfect next move.

So we end up building a roadmap for a version of ourselves we haven’t even met yet.

Five years ago, I couldn’t have put “creator” or “portfolio career” in my plan because I didn’t want those things yet.

I wanted the corporate ladder.

Until one day…I didn’t.

And I only figured out what I wanted next by doing things, trying things, meeting people and learning myself in motion.

Sometimes ex*****on IS the research.

You start creating and discover your voice.
You take the consulting gig and realize you love it.
You teach and realize you love teaching.

That isn’t a failed plan.

That’s new information.

And as project managers, we already know what to do with new information:

Adjust the plan.

You don’t need a perfect roadmap to start building your next chapter.

Sometimes the next step is the only way to see what the next step even is. 🦋

There is an invisible architecture beneath every successful career.

It is built in the risks you anticipate before they become fires. In the few pieces of work that make people remember your name. In the rooms that expand your idea of what is possible. And in the courage to ask for the opportunity before you feel fully entitled to it.

The longer I manage projects, the more I notice that careers follow patterns, too.

Time expands.
Attention compounds.
Relationships return.
Silence costs.

Hard work matters. But hard work without discernment is an expensive way to remain in the same place.

These are seven laws I carry into every project and every version of my career.

I’ve spent the last few years intentionally building a career where one job isn’t my only option. Not because I want to leave project management.

Because I 🌹love🌹 project management.

I just refuse to let one company determine my income, opportunities, or future.

That’s why I invest in my reputation.
Why I create content.
Why I speak.
Why I consult.
Why I keep learning skills outside my job description.

Every project I manage builds my résumé.

Everything else I do builds my freedom.

If you’re a project manager, don’t just ask yourself:

“How do I get my next promotion?”

Ask yourself:

“What am I building that still belongs to me if I leave tomorrow?”

Who is your career shaping you into?

Project management has taught me how to stay calm when everything feels chaotic.

How to communicate with people who think completely differently than I do.

How to lead without needing to be the smartest person in the room.

How to solve problems instead of avoiding them.

How to build a life where my skills not my employer create my security.

Every difficult project in both corporate and my PM business has expanded what I believe I’m capable of.

Your career shouldn’t just pay your bills.

It should increase your confidence. Expand your options and make you into someone you’re proud of becoming.

If it isn’t… it might be time to ask whether you’re building a career or just collecting a paycheck (and if you’re ok with that).

But somewhere along the way, I realized something, I was using my greatest skills to build everyone else’s future.

It was time to start building my own.

I want more people to realize that project management is one of the most valuable life skills you can develop.

We spend our careers learning how to solve impossible problems, manage risk, influence stakeholders, prioritize what matters, build systems, and execute big ideas.

Then we clock out… and forget to use those same skills on ourselves.

What if you managed your career like a project?
Your finances like a project.
Your health like a project.
Your side business like a project.
Your dreams like a project.

The biggest shift in my life happened when I stopped seeing project management as my job and started seeing it as my operating system.

The most important project you’ll ever manage isn’t at work.

It’s your life.
