In 1837, Louis Vuitton moved to Paris to become an apprentice to a trunk maker. He spent 17 years mastering his skills and by the time he opened his first shop in 1854, he already had a renowned client base that included the Empress of France. Outside his shop, he placed a sign that read, “Securely packs the most fragile objects”.

When deciding how to store and display America’s most valuable postage stamp, it made perfect sense to entrust this delicate piece of paper that has survived since 1868 to the trunk that has kept some of the world’s most precious items safe since 1858. We commissioned Louis Vuitton to make a custom, hand-painted tresor trunk to house the One-Cent “Z” Grill that embodies the joy of stamp collecting with the quality and security that Louis Vuitton is famous for.

Alayne Sylvia Macchiaverna, the artist who painted the trunk shared,

“I’ve painted dozens, but none quite as special as this piece. Accenting the sides of the trunk, free-hand paintings, simple yet emblematic travel stamps. On the top of this trunk sits the star of the show. A postage stamp, known amongst collectors as the Z-Grill. One of only two such stamps known to exist.

This tresor will house this tiny, coveted stamp and in just a few days, be sent to auction. With a valuation of $4 to $5 million, it’s projected to be the most expensive U.S postage stamp in history.

Honored to play a part in this stamp’s remarkable journey. And to the team that trusted these hands, oceans of gratitude.”

We are proud to present the One-Cent "Z" Grill in a beautiful and unique way that will ensure the safety of the stamp for generations to come. We are so very grateful to Alayne Sylvia Macchiaverna and the team at Louis Vuitton for making this possible.
