Smokey Bear celebrates 75th birthday

Cheers to 75 years preventing wildfires

MADISON - For 75 years, Smokey Bear has been protecting our forests and getting the word out about wildfire prevention. In honor of Smokey Bear's 75th birthday on August 9, 2019, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is celebrating the nation's favorite bear.

You can help the beloved fire prevention icon Smokey Bear celebrate his 75th birthday at the Wisconsin State Fair this Friday. Enjoy family-friendly activities from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with Smokey appearances for a special birthday ceremony throughout the day. Don't miss the fun activities and a chance to earn a Smokey birthday gift bag.

"Smokey Bear ranks right up there behind Santa Claus and Mickey Mouse," says Catherine Koele, DNR wildfire prevention specialist. "Many of us remember Smokey from our childhoods. We'd see him in parades, on posters, in magazines or occasionally in TV commercials. If we were lucky enough, maybe he'd stop by the classroom and teach us about fire safety."

The DNR is once again in the north building at Exploratory Park located on the south side of Main Street across from the Original Cream Puff Pavilion. If you can't make it for his birthday, you are never too old to visit Smokey's Schoolhouse throughout State Fair and learn about how to prevent wildfires. If you can't get to the Fairgrounds, watch Smokey show off his dancing skills on the steps of the Capitol in a F.I.R.E video with Wisconsin firefighters as they sing happy birthday to the YMCA tune from the Village People.

To honor and observe this historic event, Gov. Tony Evers named August 9, 2019 'Smokey Bear's 75th Birthday' with an official Governor Proclamation recognizing Smokey's contribution to the education, health and safety for all Wisconsinites.

On the latest episode the DNR's podcast "Wild Wisconsin: Off the Record," hear DNR Wildfire Prevention Specialist Catherine Koele and Property Supervisor Sara Pearson talk all things Smokey Bear from fun facts to wearing the suit. Off The Record brings you inside voices on Wisconsin's outdoors. Subscribe and listen for free in your favorite podcast app.

Throughout his birthday year, Smokey will be giving back to communities across Wisconsin. The DNR is partnering with the non-profit organization Box of Balloons to support fire prevention and the mission to make a child's birthday happy, celebrated and memorable.

Coordinated by eleven chapters across the state, Box of Balloons provides birthday boxes to children in need. This year, Box of Balloons is highlighting outdoor recreation and Smokey Bear themed birthday boxes for Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd Grade. Many box and birthday celebrations will include a surprise visit by Smokey Bear.DNR forestry staff, acting as Smokey, will also provide fire prevention activities to educate and entertain the children attending each party. This unique partnership helps both organizations*xpand into rural communities and introduce Smokey to children while making them feel special and celebrated on their birthdays.

Smokey will also be making appearances at several of our state parks and forests in the coming weeks. On August 9th, the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest is coordinating a special scavenger hunt and birthday party with cake and prizes.

On August 10th, Mirror Lake State Park is having a party with games, goodie bags and a reading of the "True Story of Smokey Bear." Kohler-Andre State Park is also having a party August 10 with fire equipment, party snacks and a skit by the Madison All-Stars 4-H Club.

Award-winning Antigo artist Jim Rowe showcases his life’s work at the Nicolet College Art Gallery

RHINELANDER – The Jim Rowe Retrospective will be on display at the Nicolet College Art Gallery now through Friday, Aug, 3rd.

Rowe is an ordained minister, and masterfully uses unique illustrations to illuminate the stories of the Bible, classic nursery rhymes, and folk stories.

“My faith is my art, and my art is my faith; for me, neither is inseparable from each other,” shares Rowe.

In addition to spiritual themes, Rowe also embraces the eccentric nature of folk art by using interesting materials to create textures and movement in his work.
“I am fascinated by Rowe’s creative imagination and attention to detail,” said Katy Ralph, Nicolet College Art Gallery director. “His art is unlike anything I have seen before. His intricately cut paper works are astoundingly complex and beautiful; and his collages are just delightful.”

Rowe’s collection includes pieces that have undergone several layers of transformation, such as coloring on Unoyu paper, and then ironing it to make the color melt to the front. In addition, Rowe uses designs that are then stamped on hand-colored papers such as newsprint that featured colorful melted images created by the method above.

“The great love I feel toward art is there is no limit to what can be made with these hands of mine,” he said.

Rowe’s artwork goes beyond traditional ingredients and often incorporates wood, knives, paper printers ink, brayer and the main ingredient, an active imagination. Paper is often cut, wood blocks are often intricately carved with an art knife, and then the remnants are often colored or spray painted to give further dimension and perspective.

Rowe earned the Gold Key Award from The Art Student League of New York, and attended The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, as well as Nazarene Bible College. In addition, he studied in California and Colorado and was a member of the Meadow Found Art Co-Operative. According to Rowe, he didn’t seek any diplomas at the schools he attended, rather his goal was to gain knowledge and studio time.

The Nicolet Art Gallery is located at the Northwoods Center on Nicolet’s Rhinelander campus and is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. For additional information, call 715-365-4556.

Proposal would open 35 miles of state forest roads to motorized access for hunting – but not for ATVs/UTVs

BOULDER JUNCTION – The public has an opportunity to submit comments on a proposal to open 35 miles of existing roads in the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest to motorized access from Sept. 1st to the last day of the December four-day antlerless gun deer season to provide additional access for fall hunting opportunities.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is seeking comment on an "Implementation Plan for Motorized Access for Fall Hunting [PDF]." Public comment period will open from July 9th-23rd.

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board amended the NHAL master plan in October 2017 to included elements related to road access and fall hunting use.

The implementation plan proposes 35 miles of existing roads to be opened to provide additional access for fall hunting opportunities from Sept. 1st to the last day of the December four-day antlerless gun deer season, which this year is Dec. 9th. None of the proposed roads connect to all-terrain vehicle or utility vehicle trails routes, or town roads designated as ATV/UTV routes, therefore ATV/UTV use is not proposed at this time.

Roads would be opened in two phases: Phase One, 21 miles opened Sept. 1, 2018 and Phase Two, 14 miles opened in 2019. Roads proposed to be opened are existing forest management roads used frequently for management activities. The road base and footprint exists and are located on dry ground. The vast majority of proposed roads are located in forest product management areas and currently used for management purposes throughout the year.

The public can review the proposed implementation plan and comment online by searching the DNR website, dnr.wi.gov, for keywords “Northern Highland” and clicking on the tab for “management and business.”

Established in 1925 to protect the headwaters of the Wisconsin, Flambeau and Manitowish Rivers, the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest is the largest state forest, occupying more than 232,000 acres in northern Wisconsin. The forest provides employment and economic support to rural and urban communities through the production of forest products, recreation and tourism.

Van Doren, Haverkampf receive Nicolet College 2018 Outstanding Service Awards

RHINELANDER – The Nicolet College Board of Trustees recently honored two Nicolet employees with 2018 Outstanding Service Awards for superior performance that advanced student learning, responded to community needs, and furthered the overall mission of the college.

Receiving 2018 honors were Toni Van Doren, Workforce Development and Career Pathways coordinator, and Kelly Haverkampf, director of Institutional Effectiveness and Staff Development.

Van Doren was selected for her exceptional skills in building career pathways for students in a number of different fields. Over the years, she’s become a recognized expert on the subject within the Wisconsin Technical College System, speaking at conferences and state meetings and serving on state and national training committees.

At Nicolet in the past year, Van Doren was instrumental in:
• Coordinating the Mechanical Maintenance Training Academy for select inmates from the McNaughton Correction Center. This resulted in students learning in-demand job skills and earning the Nicolet technical diploma in Mechanical Maintenance.
• Advancing the Jump! Start Entrepreneurial Training Program, which provides job training opportunities for students with disabilities.
• Coordinating the Basic Heavy Equipment Operator course, giving students the skills training to enter the career field and to help area businesses meet workforce demands.

“Toni regularly plays a lead role in collaborations involving internal and external partners, often bringing diverse groups and funding sources together for the benefit of the students and the College,” said Sandy Bishop, Nicolet dean of Workforce and Economic Development, and Chuck Kopp, Nicolet Business Development coordinator, in their nomination of Van Doren.

Haverkampf received the honor for her extensive work to improve processes within the college. These efforts ultimately benefit students enrolled in academic programs as well as members of the general public looking to take advantage of other opportunities available at Nicolet.

Especially noteworthy was Haverkampf’s leadership work on the college’s Strategic Enrollment and Persistence Plan. This initiative focused on creating a streamlined student experience, better supporting students in reaching their career goals, and ensuring academic programs are meeting student and community needs.

“Without Kelly’s facilitation and leadership skills, this training to improve services would not have happened,” Erika Warning, Nicolet director of Enrollment, said in her nomination of Haverkampf. “Her ability to draw strategic connections across the college is very valuable and deserves recognition.”

OBITUARY – Victor S. Cecelia, of Wi******er.

Victor S. Cecelia

WI******ER – Victor Cecelia passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at his home in Wi******er, with his loving companion at his side.

Victor Salvatore Cecelia was born Nov. 14, 1943 in Milwaukee of immigrant parents Salvatore Cecelia and Betty Pauline Bruy, of Italy and Sicily. Vic’s father died unexpectedly when Vic was six years old, and his mother raised Victor and his younger sister, Joanne. The family eventually moved to Park Falls, where Betty ran a resort with the help of a very young Victor, who felt it was his duty to step up and be the man of the family. Vic attended several schools in the area. Although bright, Vic did not care much for school. He became an avid outdoorsman, learned to hunt, and was an exceptional fishing guide throughout his younger years. He learned to drive at the age of 10 to help his mother, who did not drive. Driving became his lifelong passion. Vic started out street drag racing and knew he was good. He learned how to soup up cars and studied every aspect of race cars. Others car enthusiasts began coming to him for advice, and it wasn’t long before Vic knew he wanted to race. Gifted with super fast reflexes, Vic won many races on the circuit, and soon earned the nickname “quick-Vic.” During his early racing days, he met the love of his life, Janet Rae Johnson. They married in 1964, raised one daughter, Vinette, and also opened their home to Janet’s niece Susan Clancy. Vic, along with a few partners/investors, opened a “speed shop” for high performance cars. He worked hard to get the business up and running and the business flourished. One of the proudest moments in Vic’s life was the acquisition of his pilot’s license. He loved to fly, until ill health forced him to give it up.

Vic worked in charge of maintenance at a nursing home for several years. His beloved Janet passed away from brain cancer in her 50’s, only a few years after they had built their dream retirement home at Rainbow Lake in Wi******er. Vic lived the remainder of his life in Wi******er, surrounded by his loving dogs and cats. He was known as the Corvette guy by many friends, and could always be seen wearing his Corvette cap. In 2011, he met his friend and companion Prudy, and they shared the next seven years together.

Family members surviving are daughter Vinette (Cecelia) Silvers; granddaughter Ella Angel Silvers; his sister, Joanne; his special, much loved niece Susan; and several other nieces and nephews, He is also survived by many very special friends, including Mark Herian, Walter Semonoc, Marge Thoma and her wonderful family, Ron and Dory Menozzi and Dennis Wolff.

Vic will be remembered by the many people he helped throughout his lifetime, and for his loving heart. Vic was very giving to many charities, but one of his favorites was St. Jude's. Memorial gifts may be made in his name at St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, P.O. 1000, Dept. 142,
Memphis, TN 38148, Please mention memorial ID – 11331116.
