The costs of vacancy can be measured in many ways, but in almost all cases the costs far outweigh any savings you reap by not filling a vacant position quickly or not filling it at all.

The obvious ramifications of vacancies are loss of productivity, lower profit margins, customer dissatisfaction, increased errors, possible loss in your customer base and a potentially negative image in the marketplace. Employees performing jobs or tasks for which they are either untrained or unfamiliar results in poor workmanship or performances.

Calculating the actual cost of vacancies is tricky business. While the monetary losses can be significant, the effect on your employees and morale in general can be many times more costly in the long run.

There are many costs from a personnel standpoint that result from positions remaining unfilled for extended periods of time.

😡 Frustration from being expected to perform not only their own jobs, but those of the vacated position
⬇ Loss in overall morale and an increased likelihood of additional turnover
❌ A negative message that the organization may not be performing well enough to fill the position

Let’s take a restaurant that has too few hosts and servers at the height of their busy season. The level of service drops when there is either no one to manage the front end or servers are pulling double duty. Customers are not well served when the restaurant is not well staffed resulting in potential loss of revenue when those customers may not return or recommend the restaurant. Employee morale sinks and frustration levels rise when there are unreasonable expectations placed upon them which can result in ever higher turnover, more frustration . . . and the cycle continues.

Bottom line? Vacancies usually cost you money. Many managers and supervisors erroneously think that by not filling positions there can be significant savings, in reality the losses usually exceed any savings the company may experience.
