Its WayBack Whens Day. Here's one that doesn't look that old but then... Scovel's Towing (With one L ) driving a new truck and a spiffy looking shop. Next door was the Texaco station, which now is Coast Cannabis and a hundred different iterations in between. Scovel's is an institution in Manzanita. Its always bad news when you need him and good news when he arrives. Thanks Rick.

Its Wayback Whens Day. Today our offering comes from one of our local folks, Sue Crist, who shared with our local historian, Mark Beach. We've seen images of flooding in the valley and this was one of the measures employed to try to slow the water from entering the fields and pastures. The dikes! And dikes that became roads. The photo is self explanatory.

Its WayBack Whens Day. When World War I was going on the US was unsure that there would be an adequate supply of spruce for the production of airplanes. To make sure that the supply chain was uninterrupted, soldiers were activated from Fort Vancouver to the forests of the Nehalem valley to make sure that the mills were producing at full capacity. Here's a picture of "Spruce Soldiers" hard at work.

Its Wayback Whens Day. We've seen all sorts of different developments in Wheeler. This one is kind of in the middle. The road out front is not paved yet but its not pilings over the water either. The storefronts are becoming recognizable to our current day-not quite. The railroad is in. I don't have a date on this photo. Any help?

Its Wayback Whens Day. Today we look back at the opening of the new hospital in Wheeler. Last weekend, the hospital was open, again, for a short while, to sell off the remaining contents and ready the premises for demolition. By all accounts the sale was a success. Many people came to simply walk the premises and recall old memories. If you have memories that you would like to share, let us know and we will have a member contact you to preserve those memories to our archive.

Its Wayback Whens Day. Here's one from the "Learn Somethiing New Every Day" file. This image was recently shared to me by Jeff Kyriss-Mooney at Left Coast Siesta. We have been talking about the building that we have always known as the Lane Hotel. It showed up on the Oregon Historic Sites Database as the Laneda Lodge and was noted as no longer inexistence. We talked and started to get the OHSD to change their information but then Jeff found this photo. There it is, the Laneda Lodge! Now we're working to decide if it is the oldest building in Manzanita. Some folks say that the San Dune, originally the post office, may predate it.

Its Wayback Whens Day! The summer is here and our area changes with the influx of tourists. One common scene is bicyclists riding up and down the highway, riding on the beach, and cycling on our local roads. Some are clad in spandex and have shoes that clip into their pedals. Not so for these folks. They don't have multiple speeds or batteries to help them get up the hills. The roads weren't even paved. I wonder how the ladies didn't get their skirts caught in the chain.

Wayback yesterday it was Wayback Whens Day and I didn't post anything. Shame on me. Here's something for you to look at.

Ben Lane was Manzanita's first mayor. He was the son of EH and Mertie Lane, homesteaders. The Lanes had their house and raised their brood. The lane hotel, which now houses Left Coast Siesta, was known for its wonderful chicken dinners. Ben remained in Manzanita and made his living as a real estate developer. The next Lane house served as Ben's house and office with his wife, a lawyer. The second house is no longer there but the visitor's center was designed as a replica.

Today’s presentation of 100 Years of Highway 101 by Megan Lallier Barron was nothing short of excellent. Thanks to Megan and the Oregon Historical Society for a program was filled with great local content. This was based on an exhibit curated by Megan currently running until October 11. Might be worth a run into the big city.
