50 Day State Countdown: # 29 – Iowa

Admitted to the Union on December 28th, 1846 as the 29th state, Iowa is situated between the Missouri River and the Big Sioux River on the west and the Mississippi River on the east. It’s the only state whose east and west borders are formed almost entirely by rivers! Iowa has rolling hills and some of the most fertile soil in the country, situated in the heart of the Corn Belt.

Iowa takes its name from its predecessor, the Iowa Territory, which got its name from the Iowa River, which was named after the Ioway Tribe.

50 Day State Countdown: # 30 – Wisconsin

Admitted to the Union on May 29th, 1848 as the 30th state, Wisconsin is one of the Great Lakes States. Much of the state’s landscape was shaped by glaciers thousands of years ago, from the shores of Lake Superior in the north to the limestone and sandstone bluffs along the Mississippi River and the lake country around Lake Geneva.

Bordering both Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, Wisconsin has the third-longest Great Lakes coastline (820 miles), behind only Ontario and Michigan. Wisconsin’s thousands of freshwater lakes rank it fourth in the nation by number of lakes. Known as “America’s Dairyland,” Wisconsin is one of the nation’s leading dairy producers and is especially famous for its cheese.

50 Day State Countdown: # 31 – California

Admitted to the Union on September 9th, 1850 as the 31st state, California is the most populous US state and the third largest by land area. It's also one of the most geographically diverse states in the country. The Golden State is strikingly beautiful, from the spectacular volcano Mt Shasta in the north through the Coastal Range, Cascade Mountains, and fertile Central Valley to the San Francisco Bay, Sierra Nevada the beautiful Pacific Coast beaches, and stunning deserts of the southeast.

California is home to both the highest point in the lower 48 states, Mt. Whitney (14,505 ft), and the lowest point in North America, Badwater Basin in Death Valley (-279 ft), which are less than 90 miles apart! California is also home to some of the world's most exceptional trees: the tallest (coast redwood), most massive (Giant Sequoia), and oldest (bristlecone pine).

50 Day State Countdown: # 32 – Minnesota

Admitted to the Union on May 11th, 1858 as the 32nd state, Minnesota is part of the upper Midwest and one of the Great Lakes states, bordering Lake Superior. Much of the state was shaped by glaciers during the last Ice Age, leaving behind gently rolling plains and thousands of freshwater lakes. Roughly one-third of the state is forested, while much of the rest is prairie and farmland. Although it’s known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” Minnesota actually has 11,842 lakes of at least 10 acres in size, the most of any state in the contiguous US. Minnesota is also home to the headwaters of the mighty Mississippi River.

Minnesota’s Northwest Angle makes it the northernmost state in the contiguous US and is the only part of the lower 48 located north of the 49th parallel. This remote region, made up mostly of the massive Lake of the Woods and a small, isolated land area, exists because of a historical mapping error. Residents must travel across the lake or pass through Canada to reach the rest of the US.

50 Day State Countdown: # 33 – Oregon

Admitted to the Union on February 14th, 1859 as the 33rd state, Oregon is one of the most geographically diverse states in the US, home to volcanic peaks, dense forests, fertile farmland, high desert, and a rugged Pacific coastline. The Pacific Northwest state extends from the Columbia River in the north, through the Cascade Mountains with their volcanoes and Crater Lake (the deepest lake in the United States at 1,932' deep), to the Klamath Mountains in the south and the extensive farm and ranch country of the Columbia Plateau in the east.

Oregon played a major role in westward expansion. Located at the end of the Oregon Trail, Oregon City (the former capital of the Oregon Territory) was the first incorporated city west of the Rocky Mountains.

Admitted to the Union on January 29th, 1861 as the 34th state, Kansas contains the geographic center of the contiguous United States, which is approximately 2.6 miles northwest of the city of Lebanon, Kansas. From Mount Sunflower and the Great Plains in the west, past the historic Arkansas River, to the Missouri River in the east, Kansas is a state where you'll see gentle rolling plains falling in elevation from west to east.

Until 1989, the Meades Ranch Triangulation Station in Kansas’ Osborne County was the central reference point for all maps of North America!

50 Day State Countdown: # 35 – West Virginia

Admitted to the Union on June 20th, 1863 as the 35th state, West Virginia was the first of two states to join the US during the Civil War. The area that became West Virginia (commonly called Trans-Allegheny Virginia) split from the state of Virginia (a Confederate state) in 1861, due to deep political and geographic differences.

Some of the most rugged land in the country is in West Virginia, which is almost entirely mountainous. The Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountain Ranges run from the northeast to the southwest, and the Appalachian Plateau, with its flat-topped highlands and rounded hills, covers the rest of the state.

50 Day State Countdown: # 36 – Nevada

Admitted to the Union on October 31st, 1864 as the 36th state, Nevada was the second of two states added to the Union during the Civil War (after West Virginia). Although Nevada is known for being the home of Las Vegas, it also has grassy valleys, rugged, snow-covered mountains, alkalai flats, and open sandy deserts. The beautiful glacial Lake Tahoe lies on the California border, and over 150 mountain ranges dominate the rest of the state. Nevada is the driest U.S. state, both lying in the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada and receiving among the highest solar irradiance of any U.S. state

The first Europeans to explore the region were Spanish. They called the region Nevada, which means “snowy” in Spanish, after the abundance of snow-capped mountains, which reminded them of the Sierra Nevada mountains in Spain.

50 Day State Countdown: # 37 – Nebraska

Admitted to the Union on March 1st, 1867 as the 37th state, Nebraska is composed of two major land regions: the Dissected Till Plains (the east) and the Great Plains (the west). The land west of the Missouri River is beautiful farm country, with streams and rivers crossing between rolling hills. The Platte river runs through the entire state, and just north of it are the Sand Hills, the largest area of sand dunes in North America. A former tourist slogan for the state was "Where the West Begins.”

Nebraska's name comes from the archaic Otoe Ñí Brásge or the Omaha Ní Btháska, meaning "flat water", after the Platte River.

50 Day State Countdown: # 38 – Colorado

Admitted to the Union on August 1st, 1876 as the 38th state (just four weeks after the Centennial of the US), Colorado extends from the Colorado Plateau through the massive Rocky Mountains and out to the Great Plains in the east. Most of the highest summits of the Rockies are in Colorado, which has an average elevation of 6,800 ft. The state is home to 58 peaks over 14,000 ft, known as the Colorado Fourteeners. Among them is Pikes Peak, whose sweeping panoramic views inspired Katharine Lee Bates’ “America the Beautiful.” Colorado is among 3 states, along with Wyoming and Utah, whose borders are defined solely by straight boundary lines and not natural features.
