How do you walk away from yourself?
That’s the question I kept asking when I decided to retire.
When your business is built around your personal brand, retiring isn’t just leaving a job. It feels like leaving a piece of who you are on the table.
I recently sat down with Gordon Callum on his "Retirement Pointers" podcast to talk honestly about that transition.
We covered:
🔹 Hitting a wall at 55 and walking away from corporate life to start my own consultancy
🔹 Why I went to therapy to process stepping back from my personal brand
🔹 How I told long-term clients and made sure they landed with people I trust
🔹 The “dimmer switch” approach to winding down instead of flipping the lights off
🔹 Rediscovering the things that got sidelined for decades (yes, I still want to learn to read music before I croak)
My biggest piece of advice? Start planning earlier than you think you need to. Experiment.
Get clear on how you actually want to spend your time.
Retirement isn’t an ending. It’s a new chapter you get to design.
Thanks, Gordon, for a thoughtful and generous conversation.
