October is LGBTQIA+
History Month

Thanks to rainbowandco.uk’s LGBT history month article, we discovered the story of Sir Ewan Forbes, who was born in Scotland in 1912, and assigned female at birth. Sir Ewan identified “as a boy” early in life, and was supported by his family, though often “made to dress up [as a girl]” for formal occasions. Interestingly, he would study and consult with many physicians and psychologists exploring gender across Europe who would later be silenced by the N**i party.

Sir Ewan studied medicine and then set up a practice near his home. In 1952 he formally petitioned to change his s*x (supported by many of his patients), and legally married a month later. Upon the death of his brother, he had to fight for his right to inherit a title that was entailed to the male line, which he successfully did, becoming Sir Ewan Forbes, 11th Baronet. This was perceived as so threatening that the ability to petition for gender marker changes was removed from British law in the 60s.

October 13th begins HERPES
Awareness Week

This matters because the stigma attached this this extremely common, non-lethal, treatable viral infection has made people feel ostracized for too long.

Approximately 64% of all people have HSV-I, and 13% have HSV-2. Most HSV infections are asymptomatic or unrecognized, but symptoms include painful blisters or ulcers that can recur over time. These can be managed with antiviral medications, which also reduces transmission, as this occurs most often with contact with active sores.

Types of Herpes Simplex Virus

HSV-1
Usually expressed as oral/cold sores, but can cause ge***al sores also. Spread by contact with an outbreak, often kissing, but also oral s3x.

HSV-2
Usually expressed as ge***al sores, but can cause oral sores also. Spread by contact with an outbreak, often s3xual.

October is the month for Health Literacy

What does this mean?
Knowing where our health information comes from - what is the source?
Understanding how the information was obtained -what is the data and what do these results mean?
Understanding how the information fits into a larger picture - can just one result invalidate all other studies?

For example....
What if you read a report of a respected scientist who was, in one case, able to resurrect the deceased body of a man via replacement parts and the application of electricity?
Does that mean this is possible in all cases of death?
Should we all demand this treatment immediately?
Does this mean this treatment is ready for all?

(Experiments with electricity would lead to medical treatments, but that doesn’t make Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein a treatment manual!)
