In honor of Juneteenth: this is a painting we appraised of Melrose Plantation by Clementine Hunter, a self-taught artist who lived and worked on the plantation, and began selling her artworks in her 50s. Hunter became the first African American artist to have a solo exhibition at the New Orleans Museum of Art, and her works have a lasting legacy in 20th century folk artists. Our sister company's most recent auction in Zoar, Ohio was a great success with 95% of the lots sold, and a sale total that exceeded the overall pre-sale estimate! It was a great day for painted furniture and folk art, and we so appreciate the generous welcome of the Zoar community. We'll be back at Zoar in May 2027!
