West Nile-positive mosquitoes have been confirmed in Metro Atlanta. After our initial advisory, we wanted to share the practical prevention steps homeowners can take right now.

The best protection starts with prevention.

Remember the 5 D’s of mosquito prevention:

DRAIN standing water around your home.
Check flowerpot saucers, buckets, gutters, pool covers, toys, tarps, birdbaths, and low spots after rain.

DEFENSE with an EPA-registered insect repellent.
Use products containing approved active ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus, and always follow the label.

DRESS in long sleeves and long pants when practical.
Loose-fitting clothing can help reduce exposed skin.

DOORS and window screens should fit tightly.
Repair holes and gaps that allow mosquitoes inside.

DUSK/DAWN are times to be especially mindful.
Mosquitoes are often more active during early morning and evening hours.

After an extended dry stretch across Georgia, we may finally see some rain moving into the Atlanta area.

That is good news in a lot of ways.

But it can also signal a shift in pest activity.

Dry conditions often push pests to search for moisture and shelter closer to the home. When rain returns, activity can pick back up quickly, especially around foundations, mulch beds, crawlspaces, and shaded areas.
