Retail crime is down. Prevention still matters.

While some retail crime measures have improved since 2024, the problem persists in various parts of the U.S. Reported shoplifting declined in cities studied in 2025, but rose again across the cities studied in early 2026. Trends vary by location and offense.

Understanding the categories helps explain the headlines:

▪️ Theft / shoplifting: Taking merchandise without force or threats against a person.
▪️ Burglary: Unlawfully entering a building with the intent to commit a crime, usually theft.
▪️ Robbery: Taking property using force or threats against a person—a violent crime.
▪️ Vandalism: Deliberately damaging or destroying property.

Smash-and-grab describes a method, not a single crime category. Breaking into doors or windows to steal valuables may involve theft, burglary, vandalism or robbery, depending on the circumstances.

“Nonviolent” crime doesn’t mean harmless. Stolen inventory, broken glass, costly repairs and business interruptions take a toll—and can leave employees and shoppers feeling unsafe.

Retail theft may be easing in some areas, but smash-and-grab attacks haven’t gone away.

After years of rising in-store theft, recent National Retail Federation research shows declines in shoplifting and merchandise theft among surveyed retailers. That’s encouraging—but businesses still face serious risks.

A recent WDHA report highlights 10 daytime smash-and-grab robberies targeting New Jersey jewelry retailers since January, including an incident at Bloomingdale’s in Hackensack. The reported attacks involved masked intruders using sledgehammers to breach storefronts and steal merchandise.

For business owners and facility managers, these incidents reinforce the need to evaluate vulnerable glass doors and windows as part of a comprehensive security plan.
