Something wrong with this fuel servo that manifests itself as a high power engine surge after 2-3 touch & goes, power cycles, or on a hot engine. Engine starts & idles nicely during startup but gets touch & rpm increases 300RPM as the engine warms up. Adjusting the idle mixture control from full rich to full lean only produces a 20RPM fluctuation & the engine never runs smoothly with intermittent popping heard from the exhaust through the whole range.

This unit had 40hrs since overhaul. A Service Difficulty Report was filed with the FAA.

What in the world is this?!

During our most recent roadtrip we were introduced to one of Boeing’s current prototype electric cargo plane going through flight testing. Originally designed as a VTOL, the FAA didn’t like the design & Boeing reverted the design to just a pusher model. This all electric plane has a 1000lb cargo capacity designed for 2 pallets. Its max takeoff weight is over 6000lbs, & flight duration of 200 nautical miles or a little over 1hr of flight with two fully electric systems & two independent motors spinning a single propeller. The glide on this aircraft is 17:1 making this plane very suitable for gliding in the event of a complete engine failure. The batteries are liquid cooled so they can be charged quickly within 30 minutes at a fixed base charge station, or 2hrs from a box truck utilizing the trucks PTO system to power the cooling & charging system.

This aircraft is targeted for companies like UPS, Amazon, FedEx, & USPS. Instead of using turbine aircraft to run short hops, this plane can be flown for an estimated $5.00 of electricity for every 1hr of flight. The all composite structure and lack of a mechanical gas powered engine significantly reduces the maintenance cost to just the batteries, wheels/tires, & visual inspections.

Welcome to another look at some of the tools we use in our trade. A Oscilloscope is a highly valuable tool for troubleshooting & diagnosing a high power surging engine equipped with a Electroair ignition system.

In this case, we were able to conclude the ignition system is running perfectly & moved on to the induction system and fuel system where we found the culprit.

Such a busy day today working planes with Angelina. When she’s not helping she’s generally playing her learning games or watching movies. For being four shes enjoys math, stories, & singing church songs from VBS & weekly church services throughout the day to keep things entertaining. She’s excited she got to fly with daddy on a recovery mission to drag a plane off the runway & do a tire change, bet you can’t tell.

“Help help! My plane won’t start or run after the EIS was installed & we’ve tried everything!”

We hear this from time to time & we are generally glad to help out. We have 10yrs experience working with the Electroair ignition systems and know them very well. It’s one thing to throw the system at the aircraft and expect everything to operate correctly but reality sets in eventually that this is not as simple as plug & play. Every engine & aircraft reacts differently. Having a properly maintained engine, battery, & electrical system paired with a knowledgeable installer makes a big difference in terms of time & money spent. Sometimes it’s the little things that makes a difference.

As a mechanic, I’ve been humbled at times, other times I have to humble others. The attitude on how it is accepted makes a difference in learning or continuing to make the same mistake with the same mind-set. We enjoy teaching those who are willing to learn from our experience or teach us new things we can adapt & share as well. This is technology shift.

We recently traveled to the far west coast to assist a customer who exhausted every effort in their minds to get this engine running on a newly built Maule with a hard deadline to meet. He and his mechanic spent hours working with ElectroAir tech support by phone, text, & emails but still came up empty handed before we were contacted. Within a few days we were able to accommodate the customer’s immediate need and exceeded the expectation. What made this job enjoyable was the open minded attitude of the owner & his mechanic to learn.

Results speak for themselves and a simple smile with a handshake go a long way. Thank-you is also mutual, it is the respect for each others time & experience.

Do to others as you would have them do to you. Luke 6:31

Sometimes I work alone, other times I take the kids to work & pass on years of education & experience. Verity has been in & out of the shop learning & helping for the last 8yrs. She’s just starting to trust herself to sit in the left seat & start the engine or taxi with me. Now Angelina wants to learn & follow big sissy to help where she can. Drill is still a bit big for her but she’s determined to to learn how to use it & my favorite ratcheting screw driver to install or remove inspection panels. This is what inspires the next generation of mechanics!
