Throwing garbage in your recycling bin is called recycling contamination.
REASONS IT IS BAD: It will ruin the entire batch of recyling, food residue (like grease on pizza boxes) and liquids can soak into paper and cardboard, making them impossible to process. Once good materials are spoiled by garbage, the whole batch gets trashed.

Increases Costs: Sorting out garbage slows down the recycling process, requiring extra labor and driving up operating costs for your local municipality.

Safety Hazards: Hazardous waste like batteries, propane tanks, and medical sharps can cause fires, explode, or severely injure workers sorting the materials by hand.

Damages Machinery: Tanglers like plastic bags, cords, and clothing wrap around the mechanized sorting gears. This breaks equipment and forces workers to shut down the facility to cut out the debris.

FLAGS, FLAGS, AND MORE FLAGS!!
You should not put flags (such as the U.S. flag) in standard recycling or garbage bins for two primary reasons: equipment tangling and respectful disposal customs.

There are local drop off spots where flags can be disposed of properly, please check with the following in your area:
VFW Posts
Many Post Offices
American Legions, or
Law Enforcement Stations

Please note, we do collect the ones that come here to be recycled and someone will drop those off to be properly disposed of. Please check into a local place to drop them off before trying to recycle them. Thank you kindly!

AMMUNITION - Please, Please!! Do NOT put any type of ammunition (shells, cartridges, black powder, etc.) into your trash or bring to the landfill for disposal in our landfill. Luckily these were spotted before anyone got hurt. However, it could have been a very different outcome had they been rode over/crushed by any of our workers as they are continually crushing the garbage brought to the landfill.

To dispose of ammunition, please contact your local police/sheriff department. You can also check with a local gun range to see if they can take it.

Please DO NOT put wood in your household recycling bin because it is not processed by standard, single-stream facilities, and it can contaminate the recycling stream or damage sorting equipment. Wood requires specialized recycling processes—such as turning it into mulch or fuel—rather than the pulping processes used for paper or plastic.

Recycling personal information (documents, bank statements, medical records) is a bad idea because it places sensitive data into unsecured streams accessible to thieves. Once in the recycling bin, you lose control of the information, enabling risks such as identity theft, dumpster diving, and privacy breaches
