TAX DEADLINE REMINDER: OCTOBER 15, 2026
If you received an extension for your 2025 federal individual income tax return, your filing deadline is generally tomorrow, October 15. This deadline applies to your 2025 return.
• An extension gave you more time to FILE—not more time to PAY. For most taxpayers, any 2025 federal income tax owed was due April 15, 2026. Unpaid balances may accrue interest and late-payment penalties.
• Can’t afford the full balance? File anyway. Pay what you can and review IRS payment-plan options. Waiting until you can pay everything may add a late-filing penalty to what you already owe.
• Didn’t request an extension? October 15 does not automatically become your deadline. If your return was due in April and you haven’t filed, file as soon as possible to limit potential penalties and interest.
• Expecting a refund? The IRS generally does not impose a late-filing penalty when a refund is due, but you must file to receive it. Waiting too long can put your refund at risk.
• Filing by mail? Your return must be properly addressed, have sufficient postage, and be postmarked and deposited in the mail by the deadline. For electronic filing, the transmission date and time in your time zone determine whether it is timely. Keep your filing confirmation and check for the IRS acknowledgment.
• Some taxpayers have a different deadline. IRS disaster relief and qualifying combat-zone service can provide additional time. Check the IRS rules that apply to your situation before assuming October 15 is your deadline.
Self-employed taxpayers who don’t file may miss Social Security credits for their unreported self-employment income.
