August 1st, 2026 @3:10PM

Martinsburg was toned for a working fire inside of a hay mow. Upon arrival, it was found that the barn was completely engulfed in flames. Everyone knows the sadness that comes with this news. Luckily, only a few chickens did not survive the blaze. Mutual aid was called in from multiple agencies in Lewis County.

The fast response from all agencies made it possible to save the garage and house that was nearby, but the barn is a total loss. To make matters worse, this was the barn of one of our own brothers in the department. This is hard enough as it is, but for it to be one of our members makes it even more difficult.

John and Marika Schwartzentruber have expressed their thanks to all departments and the community for everything that has been done on this day and everyday after.

A huge thank you to everyone that assisted:
Lowville Fire Department, Lowville Auxiliary, 3-G Volunteer Fire Department, New Bremen Fire Department, Turin Volunteer Fire Department, Search and rescue, Fire Coordinators, National Grid, County DOT, NYSDOT, Lewis County Sheriffs, and everyone else in the community who helped.

This just shows that we are all a team and we come together in times of need! 💪🏻

5/1/2026. Our annual fireman's banquet was held at Squishy's BBQ & Catering last night. First, we want to thank all the staff at Squishy's for making it a great night for all of our volunteer firemen. They did a great job with the atmosphere and food. It's a very nice place as well. We appreciate you so much!!

The fireman's banquet is a night where we all get together for a good meal and enjoy each other's company, remembering the good, bad, and the ugly, and making memories. We also gave out some awards to our firemen. Pictures of all award recipients are below.

Fireman of the Year was awarded to Billy Cavanaugh, our 2nd Assistant Chief in the department. He works very hard on-scene and off-scene for the department. Congratulations, Billy!!

Thank you to all our volunteers; we wouldn't be able to do what we do without you. You are a huge part of this community. Taking time out of your busy day to respond to fire calls is difficult, but we have an excellent team that makes this happen.

We did a little training with a fire hydrant and dry hydrants last night. It is very important that we know how to act quickly and strategically when hooking to these different water sources. Dry hydrants are a main source of water for a lot of our departments in the area therefore we need to keep our minds fresh on how they work! Thanks to all who came out to train last night. We appreciate everyone in the department 💪🏻
