All ready for the cicadas. Didn't want to take any chances on these young sapling fruit trees, so they are covered with a tree netting bag. As soon as the cicadas are done doing their thing, we will uncover the trees. All established mature trees shouldn't be harmed, at least that is what we are told.

Out with the old, in with the new! The old round baler was hauled away one evening, to go to its new place...then the newer one was brought here the next day. The new baler has more options like wet baling.

Natalene's Journey comes to an end.
With sad hearts we have to announce that Natalene passed away. We are still not sure on what happened but we do know she was a Blessing to all. She was a miracle in the fact she defied all odds when she was a newborn. Her mom rejected her, she fought so hard to live, we learned how to put in IV's, gave her all types of medicines, round the clock care for the first several weeks. She was half blind in one of her eyes (she was fully blinded with cattle pink eye for a couple months but with continued medicine- she gained some sight back) When we moved Natalene into the herd- she had a little pot belly that wasn't really normal. She also rested a lot after any activity but she seemed to be doing ok. We noticed her being a little stand-offish in the herd and just didn't seem to grow as quickly, she actually looked like she was loosing. She had been wormed and the normal things you would do for a calf. We found her down a couple days ago in the barn. We blocked it off to the rest of the herd to give her space and extra calf food. She was eating and drinking but didn't want to get up. The next day, she was weaker- wanting to eat but didn't want fluids- so we tube fed her electrolytes, did a bag of iv fluids. Last night, she had a warm full belly before we left her... she didn't wake up in the morning. All we know is that Natalene touched a lot of hearts and will be very missed.

Natalene's Journey...Natalene is out of quarantine. One of her eyes has some blindness but all and all she can see. Adjustment is taking a little time, but she is doing well. No one is being mean to her but she is kind of a loner. She still loves us humans, we are her people. Training includes walking around with her harness on in the corral, the other cows do not know what to think about this. Some actually follow to make sure we aren't hurting her. Natalene will be better off with the herd to protect her and keep her warm this winter. As of the question, does her mom and others recognize her after she has been gone from the herd since she was a couple days old??? We don't know...no one is treating her bad. They just seem to ignore her and worry more about eating.

Natalene's Journey:
One thing we have learned is that when Natalene wants to rest, she will rest. You can not get her to move when she wants to take a nap. While walking Natalene today, she decided it was rest time, laid down right in the middle of our walk. We had to wait until she was ready to get up to lead her back to her pen. She pranced all the way back so the beauty nap did her good. Natalene does have a lot of learning to do, she is still very much a calf. Her partial blindness in one eye does make things a little more challenging for her. She is getting a chunky little belly, has been off bottles and on food for a little while now. For a calf that had all the odds stacked against her, she sure is growing well now.

Natalene's Journey
Natalene went for a walk today. She is still partially blind which makes things a little bit more of a challenge for her. She was very fascinated with the trailer and loved rubbing on it. Natalene is growing leaps and bounds regardless of her disability.

Natalene's Journey
(Milk does a body good)
Natalene is growing, she is still separated from the herd...one eye is completely healed. The other eye has shown great improvement. At this point she has full vision in one eye and partial in the other. She LOVES her bottles but is transitioning into food pellets and water. The radio is on at all times to give her something to listen to while she is still in her temporary calf pack 'n play. Her favorite things are seeing her humans and head scratches. This playful strong- willed baby calf defeated the odds...just shows what prayer can do. A special thanks goes out to all who prayed for this little one...we will continue to post updates every so often so you can stay involved in Natalene's Journey.

Who would have thought a calf, out of all things, can be inspiring. Her story of faith, hope and miracles continues.

Natalene's Journey
Natalene is growing well, taking 2 bottles a day. Food and water are offered at all times. One eye is completely clear, the other eye has responded some to the treatments but still is approximately 80 percent white. Not sure if she will receive full vision but still hopeful for more improvement. Natalene has a strong spirited personality, her drive is what helped her survive. She didn't give up even when she felt her worst. If God cared enough to allow this little calf to live, think about what he can do for you!

Natalene's Journey
We left off with Natalene refusing to eat again. We did figure out the reason, she didn't like the new formula. So the search started to find her the exact brand she was on...once we found it, she started eating again. At this point we can see she has turned the corner, sours was no longer an issue and she was gaining energy a little everyday. But we still have the pink eye issue...she was nearly blind. One eye is completely white but the other is responding to treatment. The vet prescribed another shot for the pink eye...with pink eye, it will be close to a month before she can be around other cattle. We are hoping we can save this eye where she will be able to see out of both eyes. She is drinking some water now out of a cattle dish. Water and food is offered between her 2 bottles she gets a day. We are also working on getting her used to brushing and a harness. Every thing we do is at her pace. Don't want her getting stressed. We will continue Natalene's Journey as she grows. Hopefully in a few weeks, we were have good news regarding her blindness. With faith, prayers and care we are hopeful she is going to be with us for a long time. She is now a fiesty silly calf who has found her voice...moo.
