The people have demanded a better solution to pest control. The prevalence of pesticide use has raised significant concern over the potential health effects associated with both acute and chronic expo

sure to these compounds. Children and elderly, in particular, are especially suceptible to the toxicants present in many commercial pest control products. Based on evidence of or potential for serious and persistent toxic effects, the primary compounds used in the pesticide market have undergone a drastic shift in the past few years, with the elimination of many chemicals from commercial use and the development of alternative techniques for controlling pests in and around the home. Gone are the days of using dangerous pesticides as a preventative measure. It is no longer acceptable to risk our health and the environment by applying pesticides even when there are no pests to control! Conventional pest control simply put is lazy. The key to preventative maintenance requires much more work than spraying your exterior foundation. The work necessary makes pest control less profitable therefore no one takes the steps to incorporate these techniques that will minimize pesticide applications. What is IPM?(Click the "learn more" button below for a more in depth description for IPM). Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an approach to pest control that combines all available preventative techniques into a unified program with the goal of effectively controlling pest populations and minimizing adverse health risks. It involves identifying and correcting the problems that lead to pest infestations and the use of nonchemical and less-hazardous environmentally concious control methods to address existing infestations. EcoGeek foucuses on regularly scheduled visits to determine wheather pesticide applications are acceptable in an IPM program that promotes the least amount of chemical use possible. With an Integrated Pest Management program pests can best be controlled by combining preventive techniques, nonchemical pest control methods, and the appropriate use of pesticides with preference for products that are the least harmful to human health and the environment.”

This is one of the most frustrating myths around ticks – and it has dangerous implications.

How many times have you heard: "If you remove a tick within 24 hours, you're safe."

The reality is a lot more complicated.

Longer attachment times generally mean higher risk, but there isn't a universally "safe" window.

Research has shown that Lyme disease transmission may occur within 24 hours, and some other tick-borne pathogens may be transmitted even faster.

That doesn't mean every tick bite leads to infection. But it does mean a bite shouldn't be dismissed simply because the tick was attached for less than a day.

The sooner a tick is removed, the better.

But after any tick bite, it's important to stay aware of symptoms and seek medical guidance if concerns arise.

What's a myth around Lyme + tick-borne disease you want to bust? Let us know in the comments!

Peak tick season is here — and it's no joke.

Right now, in mid-June, we are in one of the worst windows of the year for tick bites and tick-borne illness transmission. July 4th is historically when the most people report their first symptoms — which means the clock is ticking (pun intended).

We've been seeing a lot of Lyme Disease, but Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, and Alpha-Gal Syndrome (yes, the red meat allergy) are all on the rise on Cape Cod.

The photo below was taken in Chilmark on Martha's Vineyard. The lighter brown ticks are Lone Star Ticks, which have exploded on the island and are increasingly being found across Cape Cod. The darker brown ticks are Deer Ticks — and with this year's humid weather, they are having a field day.

Scary picture? Yes. But here's the good news: tick-borne illnesses are completely preventable. Visit our website for tips and resources (link in comments)!
