Had a customer call me this morning after having another "service" company come out to look at his leaking dishwasher. (A national servicer, not a local company.)

He was informed that it would need a roughly $300 part and $300 in labor to repair. He was advised to replace the unit and was charged a service fee. (Standard practice—nothing uncommon yet, aside from the quote, but I'll address that.)

However, he reached out to me for a second opinion. He explained that the dishwasher was leaking from the front once it started spraying, and based on the amount of water coming out, it was evident to me that the plastic spray arm had likely split and was spraying under the door, forcing water out. I walked him through how to inspect it over the phone, and lo and behold, the spray arm was split down one side.

Now here's where the problem arises. He called the company back that gave him the estimate to clarify and double-check the diagnosis and part charge. They confirmed that they had identified the spray arm as the problem and were quoting $600 for the repair.

The spray arm retails for about $36 and takes roughly 30 seconds to replace—and that includes the time spent carrying it into the home. Add a few minutes for testing and conversation, and the job is still completed in no time.

Profits need to be made and fuel/vehicles are not free, but these large companies are often chasing the diagnostic fee and a new appliance sale. They are not there to repair; they are simply collecting their fee and leaving.

Stick with the local repair companies. You'll have a better experience.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Apologies for the delayed responses to messages and calls lately. We’ve had a big surge from the holidays, and on top of that, my kids and I have been sick for several days. Thank you so much for your patience! If you feel your message may have been missed, please don’t hesitate to reach out again—I’m catching up and happy to help.

Slowly but surely I'll get this new help trained!

Hello Everyone! Been a long time since Ive posted, I'll try to make this as short as I can. Just to make everyone aware, at some point in the next month, Sarah and I will be bringing our 3rd son into the world, so at some point I will take some time off to be with the family. We are very excited and I will post more on that once little man is here! In the mean time I am working hard to stay caught up and get everyone in and finished in a timely manner. Some may have noticed on the Service Request form there is now an option for special handling of stacked washer/dryers, and built in ovens. I have added a few handy tools to make jobs a little easier as well, AirSled, and LiftCart. AirSled allows me to move appliances with ease on a bed of air to prevent scratches on soft flooring surfaces. Hardwood and linoleum are prone to damage and AirSled takes care of that. LiftCart is a tool that makes removal of stacked dryers and built in ovens a breeze and prevents injury to me and damage to the surrounding areas.
