A common winter habit—lifting your windshield wipers to prevent them from freezing-Not a good idea!
Leaving your wipers raised exposes the internal metal springs to prolonged extreme cold, accelerating elasticity loss and brittleness. Over time, this weakens spring tension inside the wiper arm and leads to uneven pressure against the windshield, cold temperatures also harden the rubber in freezing conditions reducing flexibility causing noise or skipping, increasing the likelihood of streaking and poor visibility once temperatures rise.
You should spray washer fluid before activating the blades and allow two to three minutes for natural de-icing.
Most modern vehicles are designed with improved heating systems and airflow, allowing frost to melt naturally within two to three minutes of engine warm-up—making it unnecessary to raise the wipers in most cases.
