It’s International Podcast Day! 🎙️💜
I entered this space as a video podcaster in 2011. Fifteen years later, I’ve learned a lot, seen a lot, and made plenty of adjustments along the way. If you’re thinking about podcasting, consider these five things before you press Record:
1. Give your podcast a purpose. What do you want it to do: teach, spark conversations, share stories, or support your business? That purpose will help guide your topics and decisions.
2. Know whom you’re talking to. “Everybody” is a tough audience to serve. Think about whose questions, challenges, and interests you want to address. Give them a reason to tune in.
3. Start with a format you can sustain. Solo episodes, guest interviews, audio, video; each requires time and preparation. Choose a format and schedule that fit your life. Weekly sounds wonderful until Wednesday keeps showing up. 👀
4. Make it easy to listen. Clear sound matters. Find a quiet space, learn your equipment, and make a test recording. Your message deserves to be heard without listeners struggling to understand it.
5. Plan beyond the recording. Recording is one part of the work. Allow time for editing, publishing, and promoting. One useful moment from an episode can become a clip, a newsletter lesson, or a conversation starter.
You don’t need every detail figured out to begin. You do need a clear direction and a willingness to learn.
