Do you have slash piles needing burned? Contact us early to get on the list for winter pile burning needs. Piles must be properly constructed, covered, and safely located so they must be approved before the snow sets in.

Pile burning can be conducted after plenty of snow is on the ground and atmospheric conditions are appropriate for good smoke dispersal.

Benefits of hand thinning (with chainsaws):

• Cost effective! No need for expensive equipment or other high overhead costs
• Option to remove slash created by thinning, pruning and brushing which add to surface fuel buildup
• Can be done on steeper slopes than mastication
• Low impact to soil and understory vegetation results in short or no recovery time for natural vegetation and less chance of weeds
• Clean cuts are more visually appealing
• Option for quiet all-electric saw work

Benefits of thinning forest stands:
- In the case of a wildfire tree canopies with space between them are much less likely to transfer fire from one tree crown to the next.
- Space between trees makes aerial firefighting more effective by allowing water and retardant to reach the ground where it’s needed most.
- Improves safety & efficiency of ground firefighting efforts by improving visibility and reducing the amount of chainsaw work required to construct fire line/fuel breaks.
- It also improves tree health & increases growth by reducing competition for resources (sun, water, & nutrients). The Miyazaki tree circles in Japan (photo credit Unknown) are a great example.
- With more water trees are less likely to become drought stressed. Drought stressed trees are more vulnerable to crown fire and are more likely to die following even a low severity fire.

Did you know that many tree species, including our beloved Ponderosa pine, rely on fungi to help them survive? When there’s excessive buildup of needle litter on the ground much of this fungal network can be growing in burnable fuel instead of underground making the tree far less likely to survive even a low intensity fire.
