School is back in session soon, and for many children, it’s their very first year! Those first few days — even weeks — can feel overwhelming as they adjust to new routines and schedules.

Before school starts next week, take a few minutes to talk with your child about fire drills.
We often discuss smoke alarms at home, but schools have them too — and they can be loud! For students in a new environment, that sound can be startling.

Explain why we practice these drills, what to expect when the alarm sounds, and how staying calm helps everyone stay safe.
We don’t want kids to be afraid when it’s time to practice — because if the day ever comes when it’s not a drill, we want them to respond confidently and safely, just like they practiced.

📚🚌 Back‑to‑School Safety Reminder
As we count down the final two weeks of summer, many parents are preparing for school routines to return — while the kids wish break could last forever. This transition period can be busy for families, and the first few weeks of school often bring heavier traffic and new students learning their daily routes.

To help keep our community safe, we want to encourage everyone to take a few moments to prepare for the school season ahead.

🚗 Road & Traffic Safety
• Allow extra time in the mornings to accommodate increased school traffic.
• Stay alert and slow down in school zones — speed limits are strictly enforced for a reason.
• Watch for children walking or biking near crosswalks, neighborhoods, and bus stops.
• Never pass a stopped school bus. Flashing red lights mean children are loading or unloading.
• Be patient during the first few weeks; traffic patterns take time to settle.

🚌 Bus Safety for Parents & Students
• Remind children to stand back from the curb while waiting for the bus.
• Teach them to look both ways before crossing the street, even when the bus driver signals.
• Encourage kids to avoid distractions like phones when entering or exiting the bus.
• Make sure backpacks, straps, and clothing are clear of the bus door when boarding.

👨‍👩‍👧 Family Preparedness
• Review your child’s route to school and discuss safe walking or biking habits.
• Refresh your home emergency plan and ensure smoke alarms are working as routines change.

More than one in three children who died in crashes were unrestrained in motor vehicle crashes in 2023. There was 11 children under the age of 12 killed every week in 2023.

Take the extra time to buckle them in and make sure its done correctly. You may think it's a short drive, or nothing is going to happen, but they do when you least expect it.

The National Weather Service has issued heat advisory, is in effect for the western two-thirds of the area for today. For Tuesday, the advisory will be for all of Central Alabama. Afternoon heat indices each day will go up to 105 to 109 degrees. Remember to stay hydrated & limit strenuous time outdoors in the afternoon. If you have AC, use it. Fans may not be adequate. Wear light-weight, light-colored clothing.
