At approximately 10:30 a.m., a passing citizen alerted City of McCleary staff to a possible brush fire near the 1000 block of Simpson Avenue. McCleary Fire Department quickly responded and located a column of smoke. As firefighters approached, they found an active structure fire with smoke and flames visible.

Dispatch was notified, and mutual aid was requested from East Grays Harbor Fire and Rescue. Together, both departments quickly extinguished the fire. The residents were not home at the time.

Thank you to the citizen who reported the fire and to our partners at East Grays Harbor Fire And Rescue, McCleary Police Department, McCleary Light and Power and Grays Harbor - 911 Communications for their assistance.

🔥 Grays Harbor County Burn Update 🔥

Effective September 18yh, recreational burning is once again allowed in Grays Harbor County.

✅ Recreational campfires and charcoal BBQs are permitted
❌ Burning residential yard waste and land-clearing debris remains prohibited until further notice

If you’re having a recreational fire on private property:

🔥 Keep it no larger than 3 feet across
🧱 Use a metal, stone, or brick fire ring
🌿 Clear all flammable material at least 10 feet around the fire
🏠 Stay at least 20 feet away from structures and overhead fuels
💧 Have a charged hose or a 5-gallon bucket of water and shovel ready
👀 A responsible person age 16 or older must attend the fire at all times
🧯 Completely extinguish the fire until everything is cool to the touch

Please remember: recreational fires may be back, but the yard debris pile still has to wait! 😉

Beach restrictions may differ, so check with Washington State Parks before lighting a fire on the beach.
