Today, August 18th, is national volunteer firefighter day. To those who do not know, McClure East Cape Girardeau Fire Protection District is a volunteer fire department. Each of our members takes time out of their days to train, fight fires, assist with medical calls, and help on the scene of an accident.

Volunteer firefighters all over the world take time out of their lives to be there for their community. These people give not only their time but their energy and quality family time. Being a volunteer firefighter means that we answer the calls when others need help, which often means putting our plans aside. We may miss birthdays, dinners, school events and more for a call. But the countless hours of training, calls, fundraisers, community events, and time away from family will never go unnoticed.

The firehouse is outdated and the trucks aren’t brand new. But we don’t need the newest gear and buildings. What keeps us going is knowing we are there for people in their worst moments, days that seem like a nightmare. If you walk in when we are on a call, you’ll find vehicle keys tossed on a folding table, different kinds of shoes kicked off all over the floor from rushing to get gear on, and sometimes the occasional running vehicle that a member forgot to turn off in the moment of a bad emergency. On training nights you may see kids running around following in their parents footsteps or simply because there was no babysitter, and teens who are filing out an application to be the person they’ve looked up to since they were little. That is where the next volunteer firefighter generation begins.

Thank you to all the men and women who volunteer their time for their community. Your time, courage, and dedication will never go unnoticed. It takes a special kind of person to dedicate themselves to helping others, and our communities are better because of you.

Starting July 20th of 2026, the small bridge on grapevine trail at Lindsey Cemetery will be closed off due to its deteriorating condition. The repairs on this bridge are expected to last around a year. If your commute includes going over this bridge, we suggest starting to look for a way around before the shut down occurs. If you have any questions please reach out to us or the highway department!

Huge thank you to Taylor Dodd and Wood Insurance, Nationwide, and the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety for having this event and hosting a few of our firefighters who were in attendance! This will greatly help our community for emergencies regarding grain bins during harvest season!

Today, May 4th, we recognize the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of our firefighters. Thank you for the long hours, the risks you take, and the lives you protect everyday, day and night. Whether it’s responding to an emergency, helping the community, or standing ready for when duty may call and we need you most, your commitment will never go unnoticed. Today we ask that you take a moment to thank a firefighter who run towards the danger in order to protect others.

Due to dry and windy weather conditions, we have implemented a burn ban for our district. This includes McClure, East Cape, and Gale. This will be in effect until weather conditions improve. As well as this burn ban for our district, Alexander county’s emergency management agency director, Micheal Turner, has issued a burn ban for all rural areas of Alexander county. Please refrain from burning brush, trash, or anything.
