Army Major (Retired) Tarnesha Narie Covington Nickens was born in Jennings, LA, but was raised in Houston TX. She joined active duty in the Army in July 2000 after spending 5 years in Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) at Southern University a & M, in Baton Rouge, LA wh
ere she was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Adjutant General Corps (Human Resources). During her career Major Nickens was often selected to serve with either Heavy Brigade Combat Teams or Military Intelligence Units, in which led her to several deployments. She has served as a Division Operations & Strength Manager, Brigade Adjutant, Inspector General, Public Affairs Officer, Equality Opportunity Officer and Senior Advisor to Evaluations Chief at Human Resources Command. She participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Operation Bright Star (Egypt). With stops along the way in Kuwait, Qatar, the Horn of Africa, Korea, Germany, Guam, Japan, China, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Phoenix, Miami and Kentucky. Tarnesha has earned a double undergraduate degree from Southern University A&M in Political Science and History with the concentration in Anthropology. She holds a double master’s degree from Troy State University in both Public Administration and Public Relations. She is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Business Administration. She is a member several civic and community organizations and very involved and committed to the advancement of the Women Veterans and Diversity and Inclusion. Tarnesha volunteers at schools and veteran’s centers, helping both homeless and older veteran’s life-skills and speaking to youth on preparing for life after high school and college. She is also an Entrepreneur as an Interior Designer and Events Planner, her Company name is “In The Nick of Time Events”, along with her Image Consulting company “Eye See You Consulting, where she does both Political and Image Consulting. In her spare time, Tarnesha also is an Election Judge and a Voter Deputy Registrar for all four surrounding counties in the DFW area. Tarnesha is currently the Primary Elections Administrator Assistant for Collin County, a member on the Community and Economic Development 4BBoard for the City of Melissa, Texas, Board Member of the Melissa ISD Education Foundation, and Board of Trustee member for the St. Paul Baptist Church and Cemetery for the City of Melissa. Tarnesha is an active member of numerous non-profit organizations such as The Junior League of Collin County, Far North Dallas Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Moms in Prayer, Folds of Honor, Dallas Professional Women (DPW), Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Wreath Across America, Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA), National Council of Women of the United States (NCNW), and Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), Douglass Vision Community Center, and the Melissa Rotary Club. She also holds active memberships in NAACP (Lifetime member) and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
