GOOD INFO IN THIS ARTICLE REGARDING POST-PURSUIT MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS

Totally disagree with a focus being on working with reporters to get your story to the public. Better focus is on building and managing your own in-house agency media platforms including website, Facebook, Twitter and other social media channels. When an agency delivers news through their own channels their message is unfiltered (and unchanged) by news reporters who make mistakes and/or intentionally alter information to negatively reflect on an agency.

As pursuits are among the most high-profile law enforcement incidents, agencies need a careful strategy for handling news coverage of pursuits

This sure would be an awkward press release to write. There is just not a good way to deliver bad news about your agency. By doing it truthfully and rapidly you build a trusted brand for your agency.

Cupertino, CA – The head of security for Apple and two members of the Santa Clara Sheriff’s Office have all been indicted on bribery charges for their roles in a scheme to swap $70,000 in iPads for concealed-carry weapon (CCW) permits for Apple security staff. The indictment released on Monday s...

POLICE SOCIAL MEDIA COMMUNICATION PLANNING AHEAD OF ELECTION DAY

This podcast has some good information on pre-planning for any type of law enforcement responses to election-day related incidents. News media reporters will be consumed with covering national, regional and local election results and may not have time or resources to report on police activity related to any unrest and/or criminal activity occurring at the same time. As a result news media reporters my use social media posts for their coverage of police incidents -- which may not tell the whole story. This is why agencies should be prepared to rapidly report on incidents themselves through their own social media platforms.

To stay ahead of the narrative about volatile events and critical incidents, police chiefs should follow these steps to communicate on social media

FORT WORTH PD OFFICER FIRED OVER FACEBOOK POST

When are LEOs going to learn we are held to a higher standard, and we are under intense scrutiny for everything we do and say. Our social media posts should be focused on content which enhances our profession, strengthens our agency brand and reflects positively on our personal reputation in the community we serve. Refrain from posting anything which may even remotely be viewed as controversial, insensitive, untrue, vulgar and causes justifiable criticism of your agency. We have to be "stewards of impartiality" and a single wrongful social media post can destroy the perception of impartiality at a time when we are fighting to show we are not the enemy.

ARTICLE NAILS IT – LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES NEED MARKETING DIRECTORS NOT PIOs

As a former branding, marketing and media communications executive for 20 years, before I transitioned into law enforcement, I agree-the PIO in law enforcement is obsolete. The PIO is simply a talking-head, a deliverer of agency information-many times literally reading it from a script.

Today, law enforcement agencies need marketing experts who can brand the agency, “productize’ the services the agency delivers, and create the agency’s own “media” channel with news-based websites, pages and Twitter sites. Having their own “media” channels enables agencies to directly deliver accurate news, more rapidly, to citizens which is unfiltered by reporters or editors in the news media organizations.

LE AGENCIES NEED MARKETING/BRANDING EXPERTS

This article totally nails it. Only thing I would add is the need for LE agencies to become their own media and completely bypass their local news media. Use their website, Facebook, Twitter and others to deliver their messages directly to citizens. This enables agencies to deliver facts without any accidental or intentional changes by a reporter, especially an anti-police reporter. Also, no live press conferences by the Chief or Sheriff. Chief or Sheriff can make a video of whatever message has to be delivered to the public, post it online and let the local newspaper, radio and/or TV reporters obtain the video.

This type of strategy will ensure accurate information is delivered rapidly, without including the news media. Off duty we serve as part-time PIOs, communications managers, website designers for small LE agencies in the Dallas/Fort Worth area which are not large enough for a PIO staff. www.TXpolicePIO.com

Social media can be a powerful, positive tool for LEOs as a "force-multiplier" in community policing by bringing police closer to the people served. However, think before posting, and avoid things like this which can rapidly set back years of positive police-community communications.

Mobile Police Chief Lawrence Battiste issued an apology for the "insensitive" post on Monday.

This is a great example of not only an effective press conference, but also of "marketing" your agency. He is one of the "marketing" masters in law enforcement. He (they) do an excellent job of "packaging" their pro-active activities which help improve safety of the citizens served.
