That's called decision fatigue (and it's very real thing). Here are 4 simple ways to protect your (4/4):

✅ Develop Habits

Ever wonder why you do your best thinking in your shower? Bathing is a daily habit. Thus, it requires no mental effort. Your mind is free to wonder. I bet if you reversed your shower routine, you’d have to devote much more mental energy to the task.

Develop a habit to eliminate as many of the menial decisions as possible. If “What’s for dinner?” is triggering a nightly meltdown and a hoarding of boxed macaroni and cheese, then develop a dinner schedule. Monday’s meal habit: pizza night.

If grocery shopping seems to take hours, develop a habit. Walk the store in a similar pattern each time and keep a consistent list.

Can’t figure out how to run the meeting? Develop a habit. Have a go-to template for facilitating a work group.

✅ Delegate

The best way to avoid decision fatigue is to not decide at all! If there is someone else willing and capable of making the decision, by all means, pass along the responsibility.

If you are a control freak like me, this is hard. But, practice makes perfect.

Remind yourself that control does not equate with quality. There are others equipped to make a higher quality decision than you, particularly if you are already maxed out.

✅ Prioritize

You can’t commit to everything. Whoever said, “anything worth doing is worth doing well” had it wrong. Not everything deserves your best effort. (If you are a perfectionist like me, that is particularly hard to digest.)

Determine at the beginning of the day – when you’re fresh – what you COMMIT to doing, what you INTEND to do, and what you will ATTEMPT to do.

Focus your energy on your commitments and “let the chips fall where they may” in the other categories.

Did you start your day by deciding what NOT to do?

Everyone knows that physical energy eventually runs dry, but do you regularly consider the state of your striving (a.k.a ) ?

Have you been striving for so long that you are now exhausted and unproductive? Even the best researchers reach a point where they can't read another fact and top innovators eventually run dry on ideas.

It is critical that you remain aware of how much striving energy you exert and when you need to rest and re-juice.

Here are 3 easy tips for regaining your effectiveness:

👉 Say no. Start your day by deciding what NOT to do. You have limited energy; use it wisely on tasks that produce the greatest outcome.

👉 Take a break. If the harder you push the less you accomplish, then STOP. Take a break. Do nothing. Come back at a later time.

👉 Stimulate your senses. Your striving energy is not only restored through rest, but also through the 5 senses. Engage in activities that stimulate your sense of touch, smell, taste, hearing, and sight. Take a walk through the woods. Eat a fabulous meal. Listen to great music.

Are your teams stuck in a rut? If so, you may be suffering from a lack of operational .

Honestly ask yourself the following questions:

1. Does everyone agree most of the time?

2. Do managers hire people who “do things exactly the way I do?”

3. Are we struggling to make progress on goals?

4. Do people occasionally operate outside of their comfort zones?

5. Are people rewarded for taking a different approach?

6. Is there freedom in how tasks are completed?

7. Is there a devil’s advocate?

If you answered “yes” to questions 1-3 and “no” to 4-7, then you likely have a diversity problem. Your team has an imbalanced approach to problem-solving and is crippling your organization. It may not be obvious right now, but the cumulative impact of a “cloned” team is stagnation.

How do you fix it?

👉 Train staff to be aware of the natural to hire those who “work like I do.” Also, hire people who offer a complementary approach.

👉Use objective assessments. There is only one way to assess a person’s instinctual problem-solving method, and that is the A™ Index.

👉Foster a diverse . Praise those who act as a devil’s advocate. Train your team to challenge traditional methods. And look for opportunities to reach the same result from a different angle.
