Telfair County Fire, Sheriff, and EMS Responds to Aviation Incident
On September 18, 2026, at approximately 1500 hours, Telfair County Fire Department along with Telfair County EMS and Telfair County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to an aviation incident at 51 Landfill Road in McRae, Georgia.
Upon arrival, fire personnel located a 1972 Aérospatiale SA 315B Lama helicopter used for agricultural spraying. The aircraft appeared to have experienced a hard landing.
The pilot had self-extricated from the aircraft prior to the arrival of fire personnel and was uninjured.
Firefighters conducted an assessment of the aircraft and surrounding area. No reportable amounts of agricultural chemicals or aviation fuel were released, and the aircraft's associated systems were secured.
Telfair County Fire personnel secured the scene and coordinated with the appropriate authorities. The incident was subsequently turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) for further investigation.
Chief Atkins would like to thank the personnel who responded and assisted in this incident.
