We operate from nine fire stations, using a mix of 82 career personnel and 39 volunteers.

🚒 WE’RE HIRING | ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF

Spokane County Fire District 9 is seeking an experienced fire service leader to join our team as our Assistant Fire Chief of Risk Reduction, Inspections, and Investigations.

This position will provide strategic leadership for community risk reduction, fire prevention and inspections, development and plans review, and fire investigations. As a member of the District’s leadership team, this position will also help shape the future of Fire District 9 as our organization and community continue to grow.

We’re looking for a collaborative and experienced leader committed to serving our personnel and community.

Spokane County Fire District 9 is proud to welcome Dr. Avigail Baehr as our new Physician Advisor, who will provide oversight for Spokane County’s first full-time, fire-based ambulance transport service.

Dr. Baehr brings extensive experience in emergency medicine, education, research, and quality improvement. She studied at Vanderbilt University and the University of Pennsylvania before completing her Emergency Medicine Residency at Denver Health Medical Center in Colorado.

Throughout her career, Dr. Baehr has served as an Emergency Medicine Physician at several hospitals across California and Washington. Since 2023, she has practiced at Sacred Heart Medical Center here in Spokane.

In her role as Physician Advisor, Dr. Baehr will work closely with our paramedics and EMTs to review patient care, strengthen training and education, and help guide the continued development of our EMS services. She will also serve as an important connection between the care our crews provide in the field and the larger healthcare system, helping bring current medical standards and best practices directly into the care we provide our community.

As Fire District 9 continues to grow and advance our EMS programs, we are excited to have Dr. Baehr providing the medical leadership, guidance, and support that helps our crews deliver the highest level of care possible.

Today was a proud day at Spokane County Fire District 9.

Our Fire Chiefs and Board of Fire Commissioners had the great honor of promoting the largest number of officers at one time in District history, including the addition of our new Battalion Chief positions.

These 13 firefighters have spent months studying, preparing, and working to take the next step in their careers. As Chief Vinci shared during today’s ceremony, “These promotions are earned through dedication, leadership, and hard work. We’re proud of these members and grateful for the families who helped them get here. Congratulations to our new leaders!”

That commitment speaks to the character, professionalism, and dedication of the people who serve Fire District 9 and our community every day.

THE DEMAND CONTINUES TO GROW 🚒🚑

During the first six months of 2026, Spokane County Fire District 9 responded to 4,380 calls for service.

That averages more than 24 calls every day. By comparison, in 2021 we averaged 19.5 calls per day throughout the year.

As our community grows and the demand for emergency services increases, we continue working to ensure our crews, equipment, and resources are ready when you need us.

More calls. More demand. The same commitment to serving our community.

Today, Cody’s family, friends, fellow firefighters, and our regional partners came together to dedicate the U.S. 395 bridge over Wandermere in honor of Lieutenant/Paramedic Cody Traber’s life, service, and lasting legacy.

This dedication was made possible through a bridge-naming process that began in December 2024 and reached an important milestone in July 2025, when our Board of Fire Commissioners approved a resolution supporting the tribute.

We sincerely thank our Board, our regional and statewide emergency service partners, the Washington State Transportation Commission, and WSDOT for their support and work in making this lasting memorial a reality.

Today’s ceremony gave us an opportunity to reflect on Cody’s life, his service to others, and the lasting impact he made on everyone who knew and worked alongside him.

This bridge will stand as a lasting reminder of Cody’s dedication to serving others and the difference he made in the lives of his family, friends, colleagues, and community. Everyone who crosses it will have an opportunity to see his name and remember the legacy he left behind.

His legacy of service will never be forgotten.

Five years ago today, we lost our brother, Lieutenant/Paramedic Cody Traber, in the line of duty.

Cody’s impact on Spokane County Fire District 9 has never faded. He was a respected fire officer and paramedic, but those who knew him remember so much more. Cody was a husband, dad, son, brother, friend, and mentor to so many. His smile, his leadership, and his genuine care for others left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

As the years pass, we continue to carry Cody’s memory with us. His commitment to serving others, his love for his family, and the example he set for those around him remain part of who we are today.

Later this morning, Cody’s family, friends, and fellow firefighters will gather for the dedication of the Lieutenant/Paramedic Cody Traber Memorial Bridge on I-395. We will share more from the dedication later today.

Today, we remember Cody. We remember the professional he was, his service as a firefighter and paramedic, and the lasting impact he had on everyone who knew him.

Rest easy, Cody. We’ve got it from here. ❤️

🏫 School is back tomorrow! 🚌

As students head back to class, please allow yourself a little extra time on the road. Morning and afternoon traffic will be heavier, and some new student drivers may be getting used to their routes.

A few reminders as you’re driving:

• Slow down and pay attention in school zones.
• Watch for students walking or biking along the roadway.
• Be ready to stop at crosswalks, including those without flashing lights or signals.
• Keep an eye out for school buses and know when you are required to stop. Check out the graphic for a quick refresher.
• Give everyone a little extra patience during the first few days back.

A few extra minutes and a little more attention can make a big difference.

During the recent fires, having accurate and useful information available to our community was incredibly important. We want to give a huge thank you to Bethany Von Steuben, our website developer, for the incredible amount of work she did behind the scenes to keep our website updated and make critical information easy to find when our community needed it most.

Her work continues well beyond the fires, helping make our website a valuable community resource.
