A client of ours won a $3 million IT consulting services contract with Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.
We want to point at one specific thing about this win, because it is the thing most people chasing government work get wrong.
DFW is not a federal agency.
It is an airport authority, a joint venture between two cities, running its own procurement, with its own vendor requirements and its own set-aside programs.
Most firms we meet treat βgovernment contractingβ and βfederal contractingβ as the same thing. They register in SAM, chase federal set-asides, lose to incumbents with twenty years of past performance, and conclude the whole market is closed to them.
Meanwhile the state, local and education buyers, the airport authorities, transit agencies, school districts, county IT departments, public universities, are running their own procurements with far fewer bidders and far less competition from national primes.
The capability required is identical. The buyer is different, the process is different, and the field is thinner.
If you are an IT services firm that has never seriously looked at SLED, that is the conversation worth having.
