Remembering we are human beings first and work is secondary and adjusting your culture to make space for that difference will have a significant impact on culture, engagement, retention and productivity!
Why does having just one friend or ally at work make such a profound difference?
Humans literally experience loneliness as:
💔 Pain
💔 Inflammation
💔 Suppressed immune system
Guess what?
Your body doesn’t know that it’s “just” work.
Human brains don’t differentiate between work life and home life.
They just know whether you feel lonely for long stretches of time and react accordingly.
As a leader, I have the unique opportunity to cultivate a culture that either treats people as resources, a means to an end, or connect people to work towards a common goal.
To cultivate a culture that enables teammates to be their best selves and do their best work:
🕐 Have short dedicated time each week for status updates and quick solutions brainstorming
♥ Check-in with each teammate individually
🤝 Hold space for the team to connect on common info or issues
🎉 Celebrate wins, big and space, professional and personal
