Heads up, drill community.

We’ve absolutely loved meeting so many of you at local parades and connecting with our incredible drill community.

After careful consideration, our board has made the difficult decision to cancel our 2026 event due to low entry numbers and scheduling conflicts with other events.

From the beginning, our goal has been to provide a fun, safe, and high-quality experience for every rider and team. This year has presented challenges for many organizations, especially newer teams, as finances, insurance requirements, and access to riding facilities have made participation more difficult than usual.

Rather than push forward with an event that wouldn’t reflect the experience we want to provide, we’re choosing to focus on building a stronger foundation for the future.

Over the coming months, we’ll be gathering resources, building partnerships, and working toward a competition series in 2027 that supports the growth of equestrian drill in Southern Oregon while creating an event that teams from across Oregon and neighboring states can enjoy.

We’ll also be hosting a community meeting where anyone interested in equestrian drill is welcome to join the conversation. Whether you’re part of a local team or traveling from out of the area, we want to hear about the challenges you’re facing, the resources you need, and how SODA can help strengthen the drill community for everyone. Thank you all for your support, encouragement, and patience as we continue building something we hope will serve our equestrian community for years to come.

📚 Drill Term of the Week

Today's term: Circle

The circle is one of the most fundamental maneuvers in equestrian drill, but don't let its simplicity fool you—there are many variations that can completely change its appearance and level of difficulty.

Some common variations include:

🐴 Rider Variations - Circles can be ridden single file, by pairs, threes, or fours, with each variation requiring different spacing and coordination.

🐴 Spacing Variations – Circles may be ridden nose-to-tail, one horse length apart, or at other designated distances depending on the pattern requirements.

🐴 Transitional Maneuver – Circles are often used as a foundation for other maneuvers and pattern transitions, including Null-n-Void, Reversing Circles, Peel the Apple, and Wedding Rings.

No matter the variation, successful circles require riders to maintain their spacing, match the speed of their teammates, and keep the shape of the circle consistent throughout the maneuver.

📚 Drill Term of the Week

Today's term: Single File Cross

The Single File Cross is a maneuver in which two single-file lines of riders alternate crossing behind one another. While it may look simple, this maneuver requires strong spacing, timing, and consistency from every rider on the team.

Some key points to keep in mind:

🐴 Maintain accurate spacing to keep the cross clean and even throughout the maneuver.

🐴 Keep a consistent speed, regardless of gait. Riders should not be racing forward to close gaps or slowing dramatically to create space.

🐴 Single file means exactly that. Riders should stay directly behind the horse in front of them, following the same track.

🐴 Look ahead and ride your pattern. Trust your teammates to be where they're supposed to be!
