Have you seen a German cockroach in your house during the day? If so, you probably have an infestation! They are nocturnal, so seeing one scramble around during the day means the population is getting overcrowded. These nasty pests love to hide around appliances, in cabinets, near warm water pipes, by the base of your toilet, and even inside electronics like TVs and coffeemakers where it’s warm. You may also notice pepper-like droppings, egg casings, musty or oily smell, molted skin, and greasy smear marks along their travel paths!

As the weather starts to change, you may notice more Asian Lady Beetles. These little pests like to swarm on the south and west facing walls of buildings where the most sun is. They will start to look for place to overwinter, which means if they can find a convenient entrance, they will make their way into your home! Seal up any entry points or cracks to help keep them out.

For the next couple weeks, you may want to double check before smashing any Wolf Spider you see or you may send hundreds of babies off their mother’s back! Unlike most spiders, wolf spiders are uniquely maternal and carry their babies around on their backs to protect them while they develop. This takes several weeks, and the babies won’t be mature enough until the weather starts cooling off, so for the time being it may be better to try and relocate the spider rather than stepping on it!

During this time of year, many different pests are starting to look for new places to overwinter, including the Elm Leaf Beetle. They are starting to move out of the Elm trees where they’ve been feeding and living and heading towards warm homes for the winter. Slipping through cracks and gaps, they can easily become a nuisance in your home. They aren’t harmful or cause any damage in your home, but you can vacuum up any you see and to help keep them out you can seal any small spots where they may have come in.

Box Elder bugs will be starting to swarm on the sides of buildings soon! If you notice clusters of them on the south or west side of your building, they may start to move indoors when the weather cools down. As fall and winter near, they will start migrating indoors to overwinter. They won’t do damage to your home or people, but they will stain curtains and light colored siding and produce a foul smell when crushed!

Monarch Butterflies are starting their yearly migration! You will probably start to see them from now until late September. They are making their way to Mexico to overwinter from the freezing temperatures we have here in the US and Canada. In the spring, they will start the journey back up North before laying their eggs and dying. The next generation then uses its instincts to migrate, continuing the cycle. Since they only live up to 9 months, the butterflies will only ever make the journey once!

It’s about that time of year, when you may start to see Tarantulas, especially west of Medicine Lodge! The Texas Brown Tarantulas will be on the move for the next couple months as the males make the trek out of their burrows for a mate. They are going to be most active from evening to dawn. But don’t worry if you come across one, they are more likely to run than fight and even if they bite, it’s harmless and will feel like a bee sting!

Over the past couple months or even here soon, you may have one of these visitors around your home. If you notice a Garden Orb Weaver, there’s no need for concern! They may look scary, but really they are not venomous or aggressive towards people, and they act as a very good natural pest control by trapping numerous flys, mosquitoes, grasshoppers, and other pests!
