I participated this morning in a panel discussion at a New Member Welcome Event for the Cocoa Beach Regional Chamber of Commerce.

We were asked to (openly) describe our perceptions of chambers of commerce prior to joining the Cocoa Beach Regional Chamber of Commerce, what our experience has been, and what we would say to others (including our mothers) who might be starting a new business.

I explained that in my previous experience, chambers of commerce were full of sellers, not buyers, and that they seemed to full of financial planners and insurance agents looking for clients.

However, my experience with the Cocoa Beach Regional Chamber of Commerce has been nothing short of wonderful. This is a robust, interesting and active community of business owners who take pride in the community and who are seeking business excellence.

In terms of advice to those starting new businesses, I say get involved with your chamber and meet people, and try to discover what you can do to help them, and not yourself, you end up generating friendships and business connections that can have significant, positive, long-term impacts on your business. It is an investment, not a quick hit.
