Week four of the archive series is up on Substack: “Finding and Screening the Right Contractor for Your Project” — originally published in 2012 in my “Preservation in Action” column for Traditional Building.

It’s advice to homeowners on how to pick the right contractor — which, coming from a contractor, makes it a self-audit too. The core message: it’s not about collecting five bids and tossing the high and low. It’s about fit — the crew, the tools, and the right experience for the actual work. Plus the due diligence: license, insurance, workers’ comp, and references you can go look at in person.

Week two of my 18-week Substack series republishing my "Preservation in Action" articles from Traditional Building — one a week, with the original photos. This one is "Slate Roofing 101": the slate itself is rarely the problem. It's the flashings that fail, the soft slate that can't be saved, and the roofer who tells you the whole roof needs replacing when it doesn't.

This is the second installment in my republication of the "Preservation in Action" series I wrote for Traditional Building from 2012 to 2015 — eighteen articles, one a week, with the original photographs.

Over a year in the making, that's a wrap at the Edward Everett Hale House in Roxbury, Massachusetts. This was a once-in-a-career opportunity. Hale was a prominent Unitarian minister and abolitionist in Boston, and chaplain of the U.S. Senate. It's been an honor to work on this iconic building.

The Alaskan Yellow Cedar shingle roof we put on the in 2022 has developed a nice patina. This structure is the only remaining extant slave quarters north of the Mason-Dixon Line.
