Do companies create their own burnout rates? Collectively, we need to fix the bottlenecks where burnout actually thrives. Burnout has quietly become the norm in today’s workplace, rising at alarming levels. Yet most organizations still assume burnout as an individual issue that could be solved with resilience workshops, wellness apps, or additional resources such as PTO/vacation time. In my experience as an HR leader and culture change strategist in workplace mental health, adding additional resources can be part of the broader strategy to support employee burnout; however, they do not proactively prevent it from happening in the first place.

What is ‘situational retirement’—and should you give it a try?

Retirement means different things to different people. For some, it is an absolute change from worklife to relaxation. For others it means that one can still work but on their own terms: when they want, where they want and doing what they want. Others cut down on hours but still work with the same responsibilities—they just work more efficiently out of necessity. And then there is the forced retirement: gig workers who see jobs less frequently. Or the company that needs to move forward… without you. Whatever your definition of retirement, when it happens it’s a little bit of a jolt to the system. Change always is, good or bad.

Whether not quite fully retired or merely under-employed, this is how to live while waiting for the phone to ring. As an operative researcher for luxury retail companies, I spent my career grabbing onto one corporate contract after the next, like a tree-swinging retainer monkey. But in a tariff-distressed industry, those contract “branches” grew further and further apart until I was left hanging. Then a colleague experiencing a similar work gap said, “Well, I guess we’re retired.”
