What a great day it was to return to the podium in 2023. Thank you Kevin Dean, Ed.D. and Tennessee Nonprofit Network for having faith in me and setting me back on the path that I so enjoy.
A fond memory from 2023
"SHE'S BACK...AT THE PODIUM! April 20, Memphis,TN, University of Memphis I returned to the stage. It had been 3 years and 6 weeks since I spoke in public. (but who's counting)
Momentum Nonprofit Partners sponsored the Midsouth Nonprofit Conference and asked if I would give the closing speech.
I was honored to be asked but hesitant to accept.
After checking with at least 6 doctors, I was given the OK to go back into a local public setting, still no travel (bummer). I was given instructions, do's and don't and contingency plans by each physician. Oh did I forget to mention the physical therapist warnings about shoes and stairs?
Once upon a time in my life, before COVID and cancer, all I had to think about before going to a conference was designing my presentation and what should I wear. It's a different world from where I came from.
After listening to all of the medical cautions I was ready. So, rocking my cane, my ankle brace, my Skechers, and my mask, I was on my way to the conference.
I proudly approached the registration table and was given my conference bag and lanyard. What joy I felt to once again have my very own conference bag and ID tag.
It felt great to be in the company of more than 6 people. I was excited to greet old friends and make new ones from Memphis' non-profit organizations. My new friends might have trouble recognizing me again, I kept my mask on until it was time for me to take to the stage. Drs' orders. I attended 2 workshops. I always enjoy learning from other presenters.
I've been asked many times "do you get nervous before a presentation?" The answer has always been YES. I certainly felt a bit shaky as I was introduced. No cute shoes, no scarf! For the 1st time in my life, approaching a stage felt very far out of my comfort zone.
Thankfully the audience was friendly and welcoming. Memphis has a wealth of professional and dedicated non-profit staff leaders. I did my best to thank the attendees and let them know how important they are to our community. I encouraged them to take care of themselves as they work to ensure justice, equity and provide basic needs to so many in our community.
I was asked to speak for 15 minutes. You might think only 15 minutes, no big deal. Trust me, IT WAS A BIG DEAL for me. A milestone, a giant step forward in my journey to recover from cancer and to once again do what I love to do, learn and share, meet and greet, encourage and lift up others IN PERSON! My gratitude to Kevin Dean, April Carter and the staff of Momentum Nonprofit Partners for taking a chance on me and giving me this opportunity. "
