💡 Tax Tip Wednesday: Don’t Miss Out on Your Dependents Credits!
Before you claim any dependent on your taxes, make sure they truly qualify. The IRS is cracking down, and having the right documents can save you from delays, audits, and denied credits.
✅ Child Tax Credit (CTC) Requirements
To claim the CTC, your child must:
• Be under 17 by year-end
• Have a valid SSN (no ITINs for CTC)
• Live with you over half the year
• Be your qualifying child (biological, step, adopted, foster, sibling, or descendant)
• Be supported 50% or more by YOU
Documentation you should keep:
SS card, birth certificate, school/medical/daycare records, and residency proof like a lease or utility bill.
🧓 Credit for Other Dependents (ODC)
For dependents who don’t qualify for the CTC — like parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, or disabled adult children.
To qualify:
• Must have a valid SSN or ITIN
• You must provide over half of their support
• Must live with you all year
(Parents are the only exception — they can live elsewhere and still qualify)
Proof you may need:
Receipts for support, residency docs, SSN/ITIN documentation.
⚠️ IRS Reminder:
The IRS is increasing verification for dependent-related credits. Missing documents or claiming someone who doesn’t qualify can cause delays, audits, or penalties.
