There's a lot going on in the world right now--climate change, the escalating conflict and occupation of Palestine, challenges to our democracy. It's easy to feel overwhelmed and like there's nothing we can do to change it.
But here's the truth: we can turn the tide. ๐
Kelly Hayes wrote in "Let This Radicalize You" that "The restoration of possibility amid despair is an act of destruction paired with a call to imagine--which is a call to arms. The armament of knowing you have not been defeated. The armament of knowing that the present and the future will have histories that have not been written yet. Possibility is the hope we wear when we charge into battle. It is...the knowledge that there is always another ending in play, even if we don't know what it is. So we charge into the breach [as] if that is the only way forward because possibility is worth it".
I know what it's like to feel like we can't make large-scale change, leaving you feeling hopeless and ready to give up. I used to be there tooโdoom-scrolling, signing petitions, attending protests, desperately seeking a way to make a difference. But it wasn't enough.
When I got into policy, I felt the possibilities shift. Learning to draft policy and ask for exactly what we want, form coalitions with allies, and collaboratively work toward shaping the change we long for while holding onto our joyโthis changed everything.
Through policy, I've been able to alter the daily lives of thousands and make a real impact on BIG issues. I've also found a balance between shaping change and staying true to my values and what makes me feel good.
The good news is, you can do this too. I know if more of us hold this power, we can truly change the WORLD. ๐
You have the ability to shape systems change while holding on to your joy in your one precious life.
