April is a very special month to me for so many reasons. One important reason is that April is National Occupational Therapy Month. I love how this profession focuses on the holistic approach to improve a person's physical, mental and social abilities. Fall Prevention Awareness Week is here! Please ask yourself or your loved one, "What are my fall risks?" Medications, poor balance and inactivity, impaired vision, and even your home are all factors that can lead to falls. Focusing on prevention is the key. You can decrease your risks for falls by taking the following actions:

1. Consult with your doctor if you have a concern regarding any medications or health conditions that you may feel make you unsteady on your feet.

2. Improve the lighting in your home and make sure all your pathways are free from cords and clutter.

3. Secure all borders of your throw rugs.

4. Participate in physical activity.

5. Consider getting a referral for an occupational therapist who can assess you and your home to determine the right kind of adaptive equipment and modifications for you.

September 20-24, 2021 is Fall Prevention Awareness Week. Have you or your loved one fallen recently and/or experienced a fall that resulted in injury? Or, do you or your loved one have a fear of falling.
