Jennine Labusan's family has spent generations protecting land her great-great-grandfather, Charles Augustus Labusan, bought in Washington County, Mississippi, back in 1836. When a federal judge sent U.S. Marshals to compel her to sign away her family's claim, Jennine refused. The courts ruled against her at every level, all the way up to the Supreme Court, which would not hear her case either, and a judge held her in contempt.

She was moved from Georgia to Tennessee to Mississippi, spent two weeks behind bars, and still would not sign. She has since been running free for 94 acres of that same land, and in July, a judge let it move forward. "I've never had more than a speeding ticket, let alone jail," she said. Nearly two centuries after her ancestor first purchased that land, Jennine's refusal to give it up stands as its own act of preservation, protecting not just property, but her family's legacy.

In 1882, an extraordinarily well-preserved mummified moa foot was found inside a cave in New Zealand. Believed to belong to the extinct flightless bird Megalapteryx didinus, the specimen still preserves its skin, muscles, claws, and even feathers—providing a rare glimpse into a species that vanished centuries ago.

Today, the remarkable specimen is preserved at the Natural History Museum in London. Moa were giant flightless birds found exclusively in New Zealand and were hunted to extinction by humans roughly 600 years ago.
