What Is a Tax Service Bureau — And Why Should EROs Care?
If you’re building your own tax business, you’ve probably heard the words Service Bureau before. But what exactly does that mean?
A Tax Service Bureau works behind the scenes to help tax professionals and EROs operate and grow their tax businesses.
Think about it this way:
You may own your tax company, have your EFIN, prepare returns, and build your own clientele — but you still need systems, software, training, bank-product resources, and support to actually run the business.
That’s where a Service Bureau can come in.
A Service Bureau Is More Than Tax Software
One of the biggest misconceptions is that joining a Service Bureau is simply about getting tax software.
Software is only one piece.
Depending on the Service Bureau and its program, tax professionals may have access to things such as:
• Professional tax software
• Bank-product options
• Training and continuing education resources
• Business and operational support
• Technology and CRM resources
• Marketing resources
• Tax-season guidance
• Networking with other tax professionals
• Resources designed to help EROs grow their firms
The goal should be to give tax professionals the infrastructure they need without taking away the independence of owning their own business.
ERO vs. Service Bureau: What’s the Difference?
An ERO (Electronic Return Originator) is an IRS-authorized e-file provider that originates the electronic submission of tax returns to the IRS.
A Service Bureau, on the other hand, is generally a business relationship that provides software, technology, training, bank-product access, operational resources, or other support to tax offices and EROs.
They are not the same thing.
You can be an ERO and still choose to work with a Service Bureau because you want additional resources and support for your business.
Why I’m Building The Bureau by D.O.E.
I didn’t want to build something that was only about selling tax software.
I wanted to create a resource for tax professionals who are serious about building their own businesses.
D.O.E. stands for Dedicated Opportunity for Entrepreneurs.
The vision behind The Bureau by D.O.E. is to provide tax professionals with access to tools, training, resources, and business support while allowing them to continue building their own brands.
Because preparing tax returns is one skill.
Building a tax business is another.
And sometimes having the right resources, systems, and support can make all the difference.
Before Joining Any Service Bureau
Do your research.
Ask what is included.
Ask about software fees.
Ask about bank products.
Ask about training.
Ask what support looks like during tax season.
Ask whether there are additional or hidden fees.
And most importantly, understand the agreement you’re signing.
Your Service Bureau should make running your tax business easier — not leave you confused about how your own business operates.
