Another coop s**c and span!
Did you know DE, frequently used for parasite prevention, when used in excess can do more harm than good! DE acts as microcopic razor blades that shred the pest's exoskeletons from the inside once ingested. For most large animals harmless but for chickens, who have very sensitive respiratory tracts, this can actually lead to more issues. We always recommend elector PSP for mite infestations! It is pricey, but it allows you to treat both your flock AND your coop. This is crucial for certain mites to break the cycle once and for all! Mites and lice have been RAMPANT this year! Weve gotten 4 calls just this week for treatments/prevention. It can be hard to see them at times, so i thought this video may serve to show you what they look like! The rice sized brownish ones are lice, and the singular red blood mite can be seen mid video. Customer was having issues with rats and snakes living under her coop and stealing her eggs/feed! Our solution was to install a digproof skirt utilizing 1/4 inch hardware cloth 2 ft out along the perimeter! While on site we also broke up and turned over the rock hard dirt that had solidified over the past year and mixed in PDZ for ammonia absorption! This also served to reduce tripping hazards in the run and enable chickens to go about their normal dust bathing behavior!

Doctoring Your Flock – First Aid & Beyond!

Chicken illnesses and injuries can often be treated at home with the right knowledge and preparation. Join us for Doctoring Your Flock – First Aid & Beyond and learn how to recognize and treat common poultry health issues.

Topics include bumblefoot, crop problems, parasites, minor wounds, egg binding, scaly leg mites and more, along with information about more serious diseases such as CRD and Marek’s Disease. End-of-life care will also be discussed. Each attendee will receive a take-home first aid kit.

Please note: Discussions and photos may be graphic and include blood or internal organs.

This class will take place Tuesday, April 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bobby Lanier Farm Park, 2660 Cross Country Drive. The fee is $10 per person.

Customer was having some issues with her flock p**ping all over the back wall and laying nests of hidden eggs in the storage space below. We fixed these issues by removing, repositioning, and reinstalling the roosting bars utilizing brackets for easy removal when it comes to cleaning time.
We also built and installed 2 cabinet doors to prevent future gnarly surprises when the hidden eggs go bad!
